When we return from Christmas break, my students will begin this powerful novel together, and your generosity ensures that each child has their own copy in hand. This makes such a meaningful difference in how we read. Instead of sharing books or relying on photocopies, students will be able to annotate, track characters, monitor themes, and engage deeply with the text—skills that are crucial to becoming thoughtful, independent readers.\r\n\r\nCrenshaw opens the door to important conversations about empathy, resilience, and the invisible struggles students may face. Through this story, we'll explore lessons on figurative language, point of view, character motivation, and theme development. Students will practice making inferences about characters' emotions, identifying how illustrations and descriptions contribute to deeper meaning, and comparing their own experiences to those in the book. Having individual books allows for richer small-group discussions, partner thinking routines, and meaningful journaling.\r\n\r\nAlthough we haven't started the book yet, several students have already shown excitement after previewing the cover and reading the summary. They are eager for a story that feels \"real,\" relatable, and full of heart. For some of my students who don't always see themselves as readers, having their own book waiting for them in January is incredibly motivating. Thank you for giving them the opportunity to begin the new year with a fresh story—and a fresh sense of confidence. These books have opened the door to rich conversations about symbolism, character motivation, empathy, and how authors use real-world events to shape a story's message. We've been practicing close reading, inferencing, theme development, and making connections between historical nonfiction and narrative fiction — skills that deepen both understanding and compassion.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is now a vibrant, collaborative experience. Students gather in small groups to annotate, ask questions, and share discoveries they've made about Sadako's courage and the symbolism of the paper cranes. We pause often to reflect on how her story connects to our discussions about peace in our community and the world. The room often fills with quiet excitement as students make personal connections or uncover something new about the author's purpose or the historical context of Hiroshima.\r\n\r\nCertain students who rarely showed interest in reading are now eagerly participating because this story resonates so strongly with them. One student who has struggled with engagement told me, \"This book makes me feel like I want to do something kind for others.\" Another student has taken up the challenge of folding her own cranes as she reads, sharing them with classmates as symbols of hope. We've also been working on point of view, annotating for evidence, and discussing how authors build empathy through storytelling. These are big ideas for young readers, but having enough books for everyone has made it possible for them to engage deeply and confidently.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Students annotate, turn and talk, question the text, and write reflections that push their thinking further. They've been especially drawn to the dual narrative of Nya and Salva, and many students are making thoughtful comparisons between the characters' experiences and their own lives. The discussions we've had so far have been some of the most heartfelt and insightful of the year.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who usually read quietly or hesitate to participate have been the most energized by this project. One student said she \"never knew a book could make you feel this much,\" and another has been eagerly flipping ahead during independent reading because he's so invested in Salva's journey.
