I had 60 4th and 5th grade students join the competition this year, so the books will be put to good use! Students recently received the books and are starting to read them -- they are excited about the books and already making plans for the ones they will read next. \r\n\r\nAs they read the books (sometimes multiple times), students become experts on the characters, settings and stories. When we begin the competitions in February, students will rely on their close reading and acquired knowledge of these books to answer detailed questions -- it's quite remarkable what they can recall!\r\n\r\nIn a world where kids' attention is being pulled in various directions, it makes my librarian heart happy to see so much excitement around books and reading. We have a very special bookcase just for past year's Sasquatch books. This bookcase is always a favorite spot for our fifth graders, and we routinely see big gaps on the shelves as the books quickly disappear into the hands of eager readers. \r\n\r\nLast week when the students saw me putting out the new books for this year, they ran over wanting to be the first to have the new books. Nothing warms the heart of a teacher as to see student fighting over books so they can be the first to read a new one! The books are high quality and high interest, and are always a hit with my students. During the school year, I promote the books and provide incentives along the way for reading them. In the spring, students get to vote on their favorites along with kids from across the state to select the winning book for the year. My students enjoy participating in this reading event and with your support, I will have the books available for them again this year. This is when we will test their knowledge of the books by asking questions the team will have to answer. The winning team from our school will go on to compete against other schools in the district. It's a very exciting time and students definitely look forward to it.
