Even though we are still in the early stages—practicing navigation with the smaller drones and preparing to fly the larger ones—the shift in engagement and curiosity has been immediate. The students smile ear to ear when working with them, and to be honest they have the biggest smiles even when we just talk about getting them out to work with! It is learning that doesn't have to be forced, gets students into class 100%, and wins against social media and other distractions. The drones bring a level of hands-on science and art exploration that makes it easy for them to set aside the pull for scrolling on social media and burning time playing video games. Instead of hearing about concepts and referring to a growing field of photography that is out there all around us, students are now physically interacting with technology in real time, testing ideas, troubleshooting together, asking deeper questions about how cameras work from an aerial perspective and what careers they could go into using this type of photography.\r\n\r\nThis option in class has encouraged students to become more thoughtful and intentional, and it pushes them to apply critical thinking rather than just follow step-by-step instructions. They have to try harder than they normally do to navigate the drone correctly and protect the camera gear as well as maneuver it where they need to compose the perfect image. I've already seen students collaborating more closely and discussing potential challenges before they even pick up the controller. For most of them, this is the first time they have ever had a chance to work with drones, and they are rising to the responsibility that comes with it.\r\n\r\nWhat excites the students most is the opportunity to capture images from new perspectives and to feel like they have a way to be creative that is very different than their phones or a camera at eye level. When we unboxed the drones and accessories together, it felt like a celebration! Students were leaning in, pointing out features, asking when we could fly them, and brainstorming ideas before the batteries were even charged! Even just holding the controller for the large drone during our demonstration created a sense of anticipation. They know that as we receive the necessary permissions and the weather cooperates, they will be able to put everything they've learned into practice in a real outdoor setting. For most of the students this is the first time they allowed themselves to think beyond the basics of a photo class and the excitement is genuine.\r\n\r\nCertain students have connected with this new technology in especially meaningful ways. A few who are usually very quiet have stepped forward with unexpected confidence. One student in particular has taken a strong interest in this as a way to get the most possible out of high school classes asking thoughtful, detailed questions, and helping classmates understand the technical part of getting the drone to fly exactly where you want it to. Another student was instantly the most precise navigator of the smaller drones, quickly overcoming the challenging drift they have. He instantly inspired everyone to try even harder on their turn to have a steady hand, and you could see the pride written all over his face.\r\n\r\nThere are also students who are eager to get into the planning side of the project: working with the school district and the local airport, mapping flight paths, and discussing where we could meet to fly. A few are super excited to see how well they can use a new type of camera as an artist, what images they can get for contests and local publications, and if it is something they will go into as a career. Seeing them dream bigger and envision possibilities expands the value of these tools far beyond just learning about drones as a genre of photography.\r\n\r\nWe have started the ball rolling and will fly every chance we get. When it is not possible to fly due to permissions, weather or timing, students will learn about laws and regulations, search for contests and art shows to enter, give presentations on drone subtopics to the rest of the class, and work toward their Drone Pilot's License. \r\n\r\nOverall, these drones have brought new energy to our classroom and are helping students learn in ways that feel authentic, modern, and relevant to their futures. We are all incredibly grateful for the support that made this possible. My students completely understand how generous this donation is and feel very honored to have the equipment to use. I feel relieved to finally have the means to create awareness about safety in this growing field and to help provide relevant opportunities as we are preparing our students for the future.","fullyFundedDate":1750085853876,"projectUrl":"project/help-empower-student-creativity-career/9367513/","projectTitle":"Help Empower Student Creativity & Career Readiness","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Anderson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6139343"},{"teacherId":7314214,"projectId":9699468,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our classroom now has a modern interactive whiteboard and the impact has been immediate. It has already made lessons more accessible, especially for students who learn best by seeing concepts unfold visually.\r\n\r\nThe excitement from my students has been incredible. They love coming to the front of the room to manipulate graphs, sort algebra tiles, or annotate steps in a problem. Even students who are usually hesitant to participate are volunteering to come up and share their thinking. Moments like that show just how meaningful this tool has become in our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe board has also helped students who miss school or need extra review. I can now record lessons directly from the board and post them on our class website, giving students a way to revisit material at their own pace. Several students have already used these recordings to catch up after absences, and they've expressed how helpful it is to hear and see the exact lesson they missed.\r\n\r\nThank you again for believing in our classroom and giving my students a tool that is transforming the way they learn every day. We've used the flour for everything from basic breads to laminated doughs, allowing students to see how one simple ingredient can transform depending on technique. One memorable project was a bread-baking challenge where groups experimented with different hydration levels and flavor additions. It sparked conversations about science in baking and gave them hands-on practice with measuring accurately, adjusting dough consistency, and working collaboratively to troubleshoot.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the small bags of flour, they were excited and immediately started talking about what we could make first. Many of them said it felt more personal to each group since they could work directly with their own bag, rather than sharing a larger supply. The next steps in our class include moving from breads and pastries into international recipes, where students will explore cultural dishes that highlight flour in different ways—like tortillas, dumplings, and pasta. This will not only expand their technical skills but also deepen their appreciation of food traditions around the world. Thanks to these resources, the students are building confidence in the kitchen and developing skills they'll carry long after this class ends.","fullyFundedDate":1746543282827,"projectUrl":"project/ready-set-bake/9193530/","projectTitle":"Ready, Set, Bake","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Anfinson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9714573"},{"teacherId":10100416,"projectId":9515415,"letterContent":"Thanks to your incredible generosity, our math classroom has become a more welcoming and engaging space for every student who walks through the door. This addition has already made a tremendous difference in my students' ability to learn, explore, and succeed in mathematics.\r\n\r\nBefore this upgrade, many of our calculators were outdated or no longer functional. This meant that during lessons—and especially during quizzes and tests—students often had to share, wait their turn, or adjust their work pace to accommodate limited resources. These challenges not only caused unnecessary stress, but also took valuable time away from learning and problem-solving.\r\n\r\nWith the new calculators, every student now has reliable access to the tools they need to graph equations, visualize complex problems, and explore mathematical concepts with confidence. Class time is more efficient, discussions are richer, and students are approaching challenging problems with far greater confidence.
