Many of my students come to class with the mindset that math is intimidating or too difficult. This creates barriers that can limit their confidence and willingness to try. That is why I am so excited about introducing math games into our classroom. These resources will not only help my students strengthen their math skills but also transform how they view learning.\r\n\r\nWhat I love most about my students is their curiosity and creativity. When they are given the chance to explore, collaborate, and problem-solve in hands-on ways, they truly shine. Math games give them that opportunity. Instead of working silently on a worksheet, they get to actively engage with the content. The games turn numbers and equations into challenges, puzzles, and opportunities to win. Suddenly, math is not something to fear—it's something fun to play. This shift in perspective is powerful because students who once avoided participation begin to lean in and get excited.\r\n\r\nIn addition, these math games will allow my students to work together in pairs and small groups. Collaboration is one of the greatest strengths of my students. They thrive when they can explain their thinking, share strategies, and support each other. In a game setting, they become teammates and teachers to one another. This not only deepens their math understanding but also helps them build essential communication and social skills. Even my quietest students find their voices when the focus is on playing and solving together.\r\n\r\nThe immediate feedback that comes from games is also a game-changer. My students won't have to wait until homework is graded or a test is returned to see if they're on the right track. Games provide instant results—they'll know right away if they solved a problem correctly. And if not, they'll have the chance to try again without feeling embarrassed. This teaches resilience and perseverance. They learn that mistakes aren't failures—they're just another step toward success.\r\n\r\nAnother reason these math games will make such an impact is that they appeal to many different types of learners. Some of my students understand best when they see visuals, others when they use hands-on activities, and some when they talk through ideas. Math games combine all of these elements. For example, a fraction game might include visual pieces to manipulate, group discussion about strategies, and problem-solving challenges. This makes the games accessible to everyone and ensures that each student can find success in a way that matches their learning style.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, math games build confidence. When my students see themselves succeed in a game—whether by winning a round, improving their score, or helping their team—they feel proud of their progress. This confidence often carries over into other areas of math and even into other subjects. Students who once said, \"I'm just not good at math\" begin to realize that they are capable and can succeed with effort and practice.\r\n\r\nBy supporting this project, you will be helping my students gain much more than math practice. You will be giving them experiences that spark joy, build teamwork, strengthen resilience, and create confidence that lasts well beyond one classroom. These math games will help my students grow into stronger problem solvers, critical thinkers, and learners who see math not as a barrier but as a tool for their success.\r\n\r\nTogether, we can make math a source of excitement and empowerment for every student in my classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1565716343152,"projectUrl":"project/math-games/4129148/","projectTitle":"Math Games","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kusmierski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5972221"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_89530","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":700,"numTeachers":56,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":54,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":38,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"12.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":50.5,"schoolId":89530,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Camp Curtin Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Camp Curtin Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/pennsylvania/harrisburg-school-district/camp-curtain-school/89530"}
