This past school year, we used the remaining supplies, and the kids had a BLAST! \r\n\r\nK students made amazing flower pots and finished them off with some liquid watercolor paint. This involved learning how to make spheres, cylinders, coils, and pinched teardrop shapes. Because so many of our donors love reading but may not see the day-to-day of an elementary art room, I wanted to share how these texts are actually used and the skills they help build.\r\nIn our art room, reading is not a quiet, sit-still activity. It is interactive, visual, and connected directly to creating. We gather on the carpet or around tables for short, purposeful read-alouds. Students listen, look closely at the illustrations, talk about the colors, lines, shapes, and mood the artist created, and then move quickly into making their own art inspired by what they just heard and saw. The books become springboards for projects rather than isolated stories.\r\nThe new texts introduce and reinforce several important skills:\r\n\r\nVisual literacy — noticing how illustrators use color, composition, and detail to tell a story\r\nMaking personal connections between literature and art-making\r\nObservational skills and vocabulary for talking about art\r\nEmpathy and cultural awareness through stories about artists, communities, and different ways of seeing the world\r\nCreative problem-solving as students translate ideas from a book into their own drawings, paintings, or mixed-media work\r\n\r\nStudents are especially responsive when a book features bold illustrations or a clear artistic process they can try themselves. Several of our students who sometimes struggle with open-ended art tasks light up when they have a story as a starting point. One kindergarten student who is often hesitant to begin now asks to \"read the book first\" so he knows what to draw. A few of our students with autism and limited verbal language have shown increased engagement by pointing to favorite pages, requesting specific books by name or picture, and staying focused longer during both the read-aloud and the follow-up art activity.\r\nThe books have also created natural moments of peer conversation. Students spontaneously share which illustrations they like best and why, and they encourage one another while working. The classroom feels more connected, and the art that is coming out of these lessons is more thoughtful and personal. Thank you again for making these resources possible. With these items, we were able to set up a safe , fun, and inclusive sensory area for the students. The things provided have impacted the environment in the classroom and have allowed the students to have an area where they're able to relax and feel comfortable. \r\n\r\nWhen the students saw the new materials, the kids were so excited to see new things set up in our classroom. They all wanted to use the bean bags at the same time! They also really love the new colorful carpet. \r\n\r\nHaving this brand new sensory area lets the students in the classroom calm themselves down, reflect on their actions of the day, and also helps them to manage their emotions! It really is important for students to have a space like this wherever they may be. We plan on using this as an area where we can encourage the students to read. We hope that with how comfortable the area is, many students can join each other when reading. \r\n\r\nWe are very thankful for your generosity. The donations have made our classroom better for the students and we know they look forward to coming into the classroom for it.
