The excitement was immediate, students were asking who gets them first, talking about the covers, and making plans to read them next. It's been so fun to see that kind of genuine enthusiasm for reading, especially this time of year.\r\n\r\nWhat makes this even more special is that we're going to end the school year by reading a 6th grade SSYRA book together as my students get ready for middle school. It's the perfect way to build their confidence and get them excited for what's next. These books are giving my students something to look forward to, while also helping them grow as readers. With the supplies you helped provide, I'm able to make each student's day feel a little extra special. For some of my kids, this might be the only place their birthday is celebrated, which makes it even more meaningful.\r\n\r\nSince we started celebrating birthdays this way, I've seen such a difference in my classroom. The kids get so excited for each other, and it's helped build a really positive, supportive community. When it's their turn, they absolutely light up, and you can tell it means a lot to them. After finishing a book, students research the actual historical event and compare what they learned in the story to what really happened. This has helped them build stronger comprehension and critical thinking skills in a way that feels meaningful and interesting.\r\n\r\nReading time in our classroom has become something students genuinely look forward to. The books are fast-paced and grab their attention right away, which has been especially helpful for students who don't always enjoy reading. They were delighted to meet Doug in a new context and loved discovering the crossover between the two novels. They're deeply attached to these characters.\r\n\r\nStudents reading Once Upon a Marigold\r\nThis group is captivated by the book's magical world. The fantasy elements, quirky humor, and fairy‑tale twists have them eager to keep turning pages.\r\n\r\nStudents preparing for Fish in a Tree\r\nWe're saving this novel for our end‑of‑year study as the class prepares for middle school. Students know it has themes about believing in yourself and embracing differences, and they're genuinely excited for it.\r\n\r\nStudents reading Granny Torrelli Makes Soup\r\nThese readers have already enjoyed Walk Two Moons, so they love recognizing Creech's writing style and comparing the relationships, tone, and themes across the novels.\r\n\r\nStudents reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham\r\nThis is a Florida state novel study, and I'm personally looking forward to teaching it with fresh, less‑worn copies. Students are already curious about the history behind the story and eager to dive in.\r\n\r\nAnd Hoot is flying off the shelf as students are reading this book without even an assignment. \r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is engaging, lively, and student-driven. It is often the quietest, most focused part of the day—not because students are told to be silent, but because they are genuinely absorbed in what they're reading.\r\n\r\nIn fact, I often have to ask students to put their books away so we can move on to other subjects! They beg for \"just one more chapter,\" which is a wonderful problem to have.\r\n\r\nStudents read with purpose: annotating, discussing, predicting, and making connections. Small‑group conversations are thoughtful and often animated as students debate character choices or share theories.\r\n\r\nWe have a community of readers who love books, and it shows.
