Their faces lit up with excitement as they explored the cozy reading space, soft cushions, sensory tools, and new books. We immediately began using the calm corner as a safe space for students to self-regulate and refocus when feeling overwhelmed. During literacy time, students now eagerly rotate through the reading corner, where they practice fluency and comprehension in a calm, inviting environment. The change has been incredible; students are more engaged in reading, more focused, and better able to manage their emotions throughout the day.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue nurturing students' love for reading and their ability to self-regulate independently. We're launching a \"Mindful Reading Moments\" activity that combines deep breathing techniques with brief reading reflections. This will help them not only build literacy skills but also strengthen emotional awareness and focus. They enjoy physically manipulating the puzzle pieces to match letters with their corresponding sounds. Many are working together in pairs or small groups, which is helping build collaboration skills as well as phonemic awareness. They're also beginning to notice word families and are experimenting with switching beginning or ending sounds to form new words.\r\nWith the dry erase sheets and markers, students are getting repeated practice with letter formation in an engaging, low-pressure way.
