They immediately began exploring the new sensory and calming areas, and many were especially drawn to the comfortable crash mats, cozy seating, lighting, and sensory supports. For students who are often overwhelmed by big emotions, these new spaces have given them a safe and inviting place to take a break, calm their bodies, and practice the coping strategies we work on every day.\r\n\r\nWe are already using these resources throughout the school day (and today was our first official day in school, so that tells you how needed they were) during moments when students need extra support regulating their emotions or sensory needs. Instead of relying on an old gym mat or worn-out furniture, students now have safer, more appropriate spaces to decompress and reset. We are teaching students to recognize the signs that their bodies are becoming overwhelmed and to independently choose a calming strategy or resource before their emotions escalate. Seeing students begin to make those connections has been incredibly meaningful!\r\n\r\nOne of our goals is to help students understand that taking a break is not a punishment, it is a healthy strategy that can help them return to learning successfully. Our new sensory and safety resources allow us to continue teaching emotional regulation, coping skills, and self-awareness in a hands-on way. Students are learning to identify their feelings, recognize what their bodies need, and use the tools around them to safely work through difficult moments.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building these resources into our daily lessons and individual student plans. We want students to become increasingly independent in choosing the strategies that work best for them, whether they need movement, quiet, deep pressure, sensory input, or simply a safe space to reset. Thanks to our donors, our lovely classroom has become more than just a place to learn academic and social skills, it is a space where students can feel safe, supported, and understood.
