They are working hard to build skills to advance their literacy and language development, showing growth in their reading and writing. The materials that were donated were chosen with a specific need for state assessments for grades third through fifth in the areas where students showed their biggest struggles, especially our multilingual students. For our younger students in kindergarten through second grade, your gifts support English language enrichment and vocabulary development. \r\n\r\nOur kindergarteners have been engaged in recognizing and identifying letters through the games \"Build A Letter\", \"Find a Letter\", and \"Write the Letter\". These students, with limited English language exposure prior to coming to school in September, have been engaged in recognizing letters to build words, vocabulary, and writing. During these games, we also engage in conversation and improve our English verbal fluency. We have also been practicing everyday discussion skills with our new magnetic calendar, expressing the weather and how it feels outside, and counting. As the kindergarteners build their skills, they begin working on the donated gifted games that focus on word building, such as \"Snap & Build Phonics\". These games introduce building CVC words, blends, and digraphs. With these games alongside your gift of rhyming dominoes, the students are feeling more confident with saying words and developing sentences to take back to their homeroom discussions. As our students feel more comfortable in their small groups in Multilingual classrooms, they begin to show academic improvement in their homerooms and build relationships with others. These games also introduce new English vocabulary to our students, helping them better understand the language around them and succeed in their learning.\r\n\r\nFor our older students in grades third through fifth grade, they have thoroughly enjoyed the grab and play reading games, \"Vocabulary\" and \"Making Inferences\" to better their reading comprehension skills. These games have also helped build teamwork and support one another in a nonjudgmental environment where they feel safe. These skills will carry over to the students, helping them feel emotionally prepared for state testing and for other rigorous material they encounter in their homerooms in upper grades. The students have also been laughing at American English idioms, metaphors, and adages from the \"Can Do! Reading Games\". These games have sparked great conversations about what phrases mean and how we can connect them to other phrases used in cultures present in our school. We use these skills from fun educational games to improve our speaking and writing fluency and enhance our writing assignments. These are the two areas in which students need the most practice to pass their English proficiency test. The posters donated are a tool that continues to serve as a visual reminder of the expectations we want to follow as we grow as speakers and writers. They have also added to the classroom decor, making it intentional and meaningful for students. \r\n\r\nAs I watch these students grow in language skills and academic success, they are rewarded for their hard work ethic through sticker charts that earn donated prizes, such as water bottle stickers and a treasure box, all gifted by you. In a school where students have very little means at home, these gifts mean the world to them. I am so proud of their commitment to meeting expectations, showing respect, and understanding the importance of making our classroom a safe place for all to speak and learn at different language levels and cultural backgrounds. These results are also a big part of you, as our donors, who continue to show care for the education of our students and their well-being, and for that, we will not forget the mark you have left in our classroom. \r\n\r\nThank you.","fullyFundedDate":1760932241485,"projectUrl":"project/building-english-language-proficiency-in/9840573/","projectTitle":"Building English Language Proficiency in Delaware","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Horvat","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10316885"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_44544","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":335,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":33,"percentWhite":23,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":35,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":55.9,"schoolId":44544,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Brookside Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Brookside Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/delaware/christina-school-district/brookside-elementary-school/44544"}
