Students have used algebra tiles or even looked at 2d pictures to combine like terms and find the value of (x). The addition of the balance beam, dice and game pieces have allowed them to physically move the pieces around and discuss the math within our small groups. With this manipulative students are able to see misconceptions in real time and are able to correct themselves through group work. Before 20% of my students were able to solve at least 70% of the equations given to them. With this manipulative, 85% of my students are able to solve equations at least 80% of the time.
