One of our favorite moments so far has been pairing reading passages with the stationary bikes. Students take turns riding while reading aloud or silently, then reflecting on what they read. This has been especially helpful for students who struggle to sit still—movement has helped them stay focused, energized, and confident. I've seen students who were once reluctant readers eagerly asking, \"Is it my turn to read and ride today?\"\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement filled the room. Their faces lit up, and several students actually cheered. They were amazed that reading could be combined with movement, and they immediately wanted to know how it would work. One student said it felt like \"learning at the gym,\" which perfectly captures how fun and motivating this experience has been for them.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, our next steps include using these resources as part of a larger health-and-literacy focus. Students are currently working on reading comprehension lessons, exercise, and healthy habits. They will soon be writing short reflections about how movement affects their learning and mood, helping them make real-world connections between physical health and academic success.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has given my students more than supplies—you've given them joy, confidence, and a new way to experience learning. These texts introduce key academic skills (identifying main ideas, interpreting graphs, noticing text structure, and learning content-area vocabulary) and are, most importantly, accessible for students who are still developing foundational English. The books pair images with simple (but academic!) text which allows the students to practice decoding, to build vocabulary, and to strengthen reading stamina without feeling overwhelmed or \"babyed.\" \r\n\r\nThese readers let my emergent bilingual students grow their English and their science knowledge at the same time, ensuring that they don't fall behind in STEM while building language proficiency. They're reading real science, and they know it.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is active and social. Students read in pairs, discuss new vocabulary, and practice using scientific terms in short speaking and writing tasks. He started at Level 1, moved into Level 2, and if he continues at this pace, he'll make it to Level 3 before the year is out.
