I couldn't believe it! This was such a generous donation, and I did not expect it get funded so quickly and completely. While teens and preteens spend a lot of time gaming, they often lack these deeper thinking skills and struggle to solve complicated situations on their own. My 78 seventh graders have thoroughly enjoyed this project we've been doing, and they have learned so much. I'm excited that I was able to give them a unit to have fun with, expand their problem-solving skills, and hopefully remember for years to come. \r\n\r\nThis unit has included several topics that were associated with the games that were donated. Since this unit was taught one hour per day, it lasted about 9 weeks and was taught four times throughout the year with a new group of students every quarter. The first week focused on sportsmanship strategy, and reflection (Solitaire, Sudoku, Tic-Tac-Toe, & Connect Four). The second week focused on thinking ahead about future moves (Blokus & Checkers). The third week highlighted probability, strategy, and playing the odds (War, Uno, Farkle). Week 4 highlighted hidden information, deduction, and bluffing (Guess Who, Gumpsh, Werewolf). During the fifth week, we focused on teamwork and collaboration (Taboo, Codenames). Weeks 6-9 involved the creation of their own board and/or card games, for which they applied previously taught strategies and ideas. Each week also included daily journal prompts related to the topic being practiced that week. \r\n\r\nIt has been a lot of fun seeing what my students have come up with and skills they have learned along the way. I cannot wait to continue using these games and see what students can do in the future. Thank you again for making such an impact on me and my students.","fullyFundedDate":1763128220358,"projectUrl":"project/thinking-like-a-champion/9844550/","projectTitle":"Thinking Like a Champion","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. DeBruyne","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3486918_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x1008,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1760821601534","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3486918"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25350","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":374,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":86,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.0,"schoolId":25350,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Broadmoor Junior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Broadmoor Junior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/pekin-public-school-district-108/broadmoor-junior-high-school/25350"}
