Due to your generosity, students have 24 additional NC Children's Book Award Picture Books they may check out and read. \r\n\r\nEvery year, our students enjoy the NC Children's Book Award Nominees. Each time we read a new nominee, we have more students who want to check out the book than copies we own. We will be reading these books through March. Students will vote for their favorite book in March or April. \r\n\r\nWe have already been reading 100 Mighty Dragons All Named Broccoli, Buffalo Fluffalo, The Man Who Didn't Like Animals, The Yellow Bus, Whalesong, Don't Trust Cats, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Whirligigs. The students are so happy to have extra copies of each book to check out and take home to read again. Students have been investigating two different types of cats or dogs after reading Don't Trust Cats. We learned about how music and noise can impact orcas after reading Whalesong. Students created their own dragons and named them after reading 100 Mighty Dragons All Named Broccoli. I look forward to sharing the rest of the books and doing related activities from February through March. Students love all the books and also check out books related to the books so it is easy to see how these books are supporting and encouraging a love of reading and learning. Every year, I am surprised at which book gets the most votes at our school and for the state of North Carolina. I am sure the students' choices will surprise me again!\r\n\r\nThank you for your help encouraging the love of reading through funding these new library books. Our past North Carolina Children's Book Award Nominees continue to be checked out and loved years after they were nominees. I know this year's nominees will continue that pattern. One of the books, What You Never Knew about Lionel Messi, was the fifth most circulated book in our library over the past three months! \r\n\r\nWe have a smaller than recommended biography section and with these books we were able to increase our inspirational books in the biographies. Students in all grades are inspired by stories of real people overcoming challenges. Our 5th grade students do a wax museum project later in the school year. I am sure these books will be some of the most requested for the project.
