These tools have become an essential part of supporting self-regulation, emotional expression, and learning readiness for students across both the general education population and the neurodiverse community.\r\n\r\nThe sand tray and small manipulatives provide students with a hands-on, sensory-rich way to process emotions, reduce stress, and regulate their bodies. For many students, especially those who experience sensory sensitivities, anxiety, or difficulty with emotional expression, these materials offer a safe and nonverbal outlet to explore feelings and regain a sense of control. The tactile nature of the sand and the intentional use of manipulatives help calm the nervous system, improve focus, and support emotional balance.\r\n\r\nThese tools promote problem-solving, creativity, and mindfulness. Students are better able to transition back to academic tasks after engaging with the sand tray activity, resulting in improved attention, participation, and classroom behavior. For our neurodiverse students, including those with autism, ADHD, or sensory processing differences, sand trays and manipulatives support fine motor development, communication skills, and emotional regulation in a way that feels accessible and empowering.\r\n\r\nThe positive impact is visible every day—students are engaged, calmer, and better equipped to manage big emotions. These resources allow educators and support staff to meet students where they are and provide inclusive, developmentally appropriate support that benefits the whole school community.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in tools that nurture emotional well-being, self-regulation, and success for all learners. Having the option of the library at recess means those who want to can enjoy a quiet space instead of the frenetic atmosphere of the playground. They enter, walk to a table with books of their choice, and grab some of the colored pencils and an eraser that were also funded with this project.\r\n\r\nWhen they first saw the new books, their eyes grew large, just like the anime-style eyes of some of the drawing books! They had AVAILABLE choices! Cute food, cute woodland creatures, cute stuff, animals, Pokemon, and more. They also didn't have to hunt through a bin of sad, broken pencils to find the color they want. And there's a large number of the same color, so they don't have to wait to get their desired color.\r\n\r\nOne particular fifth grade student and frequent library visitor and drawing book enthusiast is an avid and proficient artist. She recently entered a PTA-sponsored art contest called \"PTA Reflections\" with a pencil drawing illustrating the theme of \"Belong.\" She won at the local level and will advance to the next level. I'd like to think that providing materials during recess has allowed her to hone her talent. Nobody from our school has won in ten years!\r\n\r\nNext, I plan to add some of the copies to the library catalog for checkout.
