The college shirts have become a powerful symbol of possibility in our rural community, where many students are the first in their families to even consider higher education. Each monthly assembly—where we highlight a different college, share fun facts, and celebrate student success—now ends with the exciting moment when a student wins a shirt. That simple prize creates a lasting sense of pride and sparks meaningful conversations about goals, dreams, and next steps.\r\n\r\nThese materials allowed me to build a consistent, engaging college-awareness routine that supports our broader mission of preparing students for life beyond middle school. The shirts help students visualize themselves on a campus, imagine being part of something bigger, and understand that higher education is within reach. The impact goes far beyond the giveaway itself—students wear their shirts with pride, and the culture of our school is shifting as more students begin to see themselves as future college students.","fullyFundedDate":1761947456664,"projectUrl":"project/college-bound-big-dreams-start-here/9751306/","projectTitle":"College Bound: Big Dreams Start Here","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hinthorn","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5253913_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1521987053221","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kelly-hinthorn"},{"teacherId":5253913,"projectId":9693555,"letterContent":"Thanks to the generosity of this project's supporters, my students now have access to a richer, more exciting collection of STEAM books that truly enhance their learning. The new titles opened doors for students to explore topics they might never have considered—from engineering and space science to medical innovations and environmental discoveries. Seeing students light up when they connect with a book that speaks to their curiosity has been one of the most rewarding outcomes of this project.\r\n\r\nThese materials also strengthened our cross-curricular STEAM magazine-interview project. Students were able to choose books that matched their interests and reading levels, which led to stronger engagement, more thoughtful interview questions, and higher-quality final products. Having a wider selection meant every student could find something meaningful, increasing both motivation and comprehension.\r\n\r\nThe contact paper has allowed me to protect and preserve these new books so they can benefit future classes for years to come. These small incentives may look simple, but in our classroom they spark engagement, fuel effort, and create a culture where learning feels exciting and attainable. Each week, my students step into challenges—Math Monday, Turn the Page Tuesday, Writing Wednesday, and Trick-or-Treat Thursday—ready to participate, take risks, and show what they can do.\r\n\r\nWith the help of this project, every victory—big or small—can continue to be celebrated. A sweet treat offers more than just a moment of fun; it boosts confidence, builds positive habits, and strengthens the sense of community my students thrive on.\r\n\r\nAs candy prices rise, maintaining these motivational tools has become difficult to sustain personally. Your generosity ensures that our weekly academic competitions remain a joyful, spirited highlight for all students, helping them stay motivated and proud of their growth. This choice made a meaningful difference in their motivation and excitement for reading.\r\n\r\nAs part of our unit, students read their selected biography and created a Google Slides presentation using text evidence—an essential literacy skill in 6th grade. I've included two sample slides to give you a glimpse of their work.\r\n\r\nOn one slide, students chose a character trait that best described the person they read about and supported their choice with evidence from the text.\r\n\r\nOn another slide, they found three quotes spoken by their figure, described that person using five adjectives, and created a movie title as if a film were made about their life.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting results of this project is that several students have continued reading biographies even after the assignment ended. Their curiosity was sparked, and many are now exploring additional figures from history, science, sports, and the arts—all because they had the chance to discover how engaging nonfiction can be.\r\n\r\nIt was a joy to watch students dive deeply into their books, confidently analyze what they read, and express their learning creatively. Having enough books for everyone—without needing to share—made this experience even more meaningful.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this possible. When people walk in my classroom, they always comment on how welcoming it makes them feel. From the back wall, to the cups with pencils, to the welcome mat, students notice the details. Mission accomplished.\r\n\r\nThe bistro table in the back is definitely a class favorite. I had to be creative with choosing who gets the honor of sitting at the table. Since we require a tremendous amount of reading at the middle school, I decided to make it a reading reward table. I bought a wooden \"Reserved\" sign like you would see at a restaurant, and I placed it on top of the table. Each time a student completes a book, they get 1-2 tickets (depending on the length of the book), and those go into a coffee cup for a weekly drawing. Each Monday, I draw two tickets out of the cup, and those students get to sit at the table for the week. Sometime during the week, they also get to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, tea, or hot cider as a tasty treat. I've heard several positive comments from students, and even more, \"I hope I get picked next.\"\r\n\r\nWith your generous donation, I was able to get enough supplies to provide drinks for the year. Students are drooling over the new Keurig, we now have plenty of cups, hot chocolate, tea, and hot cider. There's nothing better than a warm, cozy drink and a good book! They looked at them behind my desk for several weeks, and were so excited when the weeks of daily trivia came.\r\n\r\nEach day for four weeks, were able to hold daily trivia contests where students had to research, interact with staff, write their answer in a complete sentence, and enter in daily drawings. Some of the questions included:\r\n\r\n* Find 5 teachers who attended college in the state of Idaho\r\n\r\n* Which college team won the first March Madness championship?\r\n\r\n* Which college in the US has the lowest acceptance rate?\r\n\r\n* What colleges in the US have the highest tuition?\r\n\r\nI always tell my students that Christmas is a wonderful time of year, but March Madness is my favorite. Some students, who previously struggled to find joy in reading, have discovered that they truly enjoy novels written in verse. A number of students have even explored multiple books from our collection, eagerly seeking out more stories told in this compelling format.\r\n\r\nThe selection of books in our classroom provided an essential resource, ensuring students still had access to engaging and thought-provoking reading material.
