What surprised me most was how motivated they became to develop their writing skills. Several students said they wanted to practice writing more neatly, and a few even asked if I could teach them cursive. At the same time, many were nervous because this level of organization and writing practice was new for them. A number of students shared that they didn't feel confident in their spelling, handwriting, or ability to keep their materials organized. Having their own supplies helped ease that anxiety and made them feel capable and supported.\r\n\r\nWe put the materials to use immediately during our current reading and writing unit. Students used their notebooks for daily do nows, quickwrites, notes, and reflections, organized their binders into sections, and used their sticky notes and highlighters to annotate during close reading. \r\n\r\nThese materials have already made a significant difference in our classroom routines. Students transition more smoothly, stay focused longer, and show greater ownership over their work. Our next steps include continuing to build writing stamina, practicing strong annotation habits, and using their binders and notebooks as ongoing portfolios throughout the year.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students not just supplies, but a spark of confidence and excitement about becoming more organized students. Studnets read independently, pause to annotate, and discuss their thinking in small groups. Now that they can have their own copy of the book, students are preparing for a major independent reading project where they will explore the novel at their own pace while setting their own personal reading goals. In our classroom, reading typically involves whole- class, partner, or small group reading. For this text, studnets will read independently at home to come to class prepared to make meaningful connections, like comparing and contrasting themes like resilience, identity, courage, and justice, to our in-class novel Ghost by Jason Reynolds. This type of reading project supports our school goal to foster independent and critical thinkers through the IB learner profile. Having these physical books allows students to mark key passages, re-visit important moments with less distractions, and immerse themselves into the story without a screen as a source. \r\n\r\nAs we finished our first class novel, studnets were eager to learn that The Hunger Games would be our next big read. Many have already seen the movies and are excited to see how the book compares to one of their favorite series. This text will allow studnets to think critically not just about the text itself, but also make meaningful comparisons and contrasts between film and text. \r\n\r\nThank you for believing in our classroom and for giving my students the opportunity to grow as readers through a book they are truly excited to open.","fullyFundedDate":1750710336095,"projectUrl":"project/the-hunger-games-exploring-literacy-ju/9425396/","projectTitle":"The Hunger Games: Exploring Literacy, Justice, and Critical Thinking","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cervantes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10060594_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1750445077418","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10060594"},{"teacherId":10021626,"projectId":9682265,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for buying us The Things They Carried!
