Students who often struggle to feel successful in traditional academic settings found confidence and ownership while working with their hands. They learned how to prepare soil, plant responsibly, manage irrigation, and understand the science behind sustainable growing practices.\r\n\r\nMore importantly, they learned patience.\r\n\r\nThey saw firsthand that growth takes time — whether in plants or in themselves.\r\n\r\nMany of my students attend a continuation high school due to interrupted educational experiences or personal challenges. The garden became a calm, grounding environment where they could reset, focus, and experience tangible progress. Watching something they planted begin to grow created a visible reminder that effort produces results.\r\n\r\nAcademically, students strengthened their understanding of environmental science, sustainability, responsibility, and teamwork. They practiced problem-solving when plants struggled and celebrated small wins when seedlings thrived.\r\n\r\nSocial-emotionally, I saw something even more powerful: students taking pride in the space. They reminded each other to water. They checked soil moisture without being prompted. They asked thoughtful questions about composting and conservation. They began to see themselves as caretakers.\r\n\r\nYour support didn't just provide materials.\r\n\r\nIt cultivated confidence.\r\nIt nurtured responsibility.\r\nIt planted the belief that they are capable of growth.\r\n\r\nThe impact continues each time a student steps into the garden and says, \"I helped build this.\"\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us cultivate not just green thumbs, but sustainable minds.","fullyFundedDate":1714752127371,"projectUrl":"project/high-school-horticulture-cultivating-gr/8320151/","projectTitle":"High School Horticulture: Cultivating Green Thumbs and Sustainable Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Wade","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9515087_orig.jpg?crop=2890,2890,x561,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1772587128061","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9515087"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_24011","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":154,"numTeachers":10,"percentFrplEligible":78,"percentAsian":7,"percentBlack":31,"percentWhite":7,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":44,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"10 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.0,"schoolId":24011,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Bidwell Continuation High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Bidwell Continuation High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/antioch-unified-school-district/bidwell-cont-high-school/24011"}
