This donation was special--a book set of the Crossover was necessary so that I could teach my best literacy unit yet! The kids LOVED this book. Each day, they begged me to keep reading. This really ignited passion and a love of literature/poetry in many of my students. Thank you all! I couldn't have done this without you! \r\n\r\nDuring our unit, we concentrated on 2 key skills--summarizing & main idea. We also coupled this book with a poetry writing unit. Students worked on their own poetry and we held poetry slams inside the classroom to hear their work. Many of these poems focused on student identity and culture. \r\n\r\nThanks again for coming through! You all are incredible! Thank you so much for donating a class sets of Ghost Boys. It's a phenomenal book that examines racism and social justice from multiple perspectives. We will use these books in our 3rd literacy unit called Liberation. This unit will introduce students to the US civil war, Reconstruction, as well as the Civil Rights movement. Ghost Boys will be our anchor text as we explore these many events in American history. \r\n\r\nWhile we have not yet started Ghost Boys, I can say that I plan my literacy lessons so they are engaging, dynamic, and student centered. I make stories come to life with a multimodal approach. I layer text with music, video, poetry and theater. For example, during my current literacy unit, our class has been performing in mini poetry slams. For my next unit, students will write and act in a theatric version of the book. I do not yet have plans for Ghost Boys fully sketched out, but I do plan on adding some sort of extra element involving activism and art. \r\n\r\nOur school does not have the budget to purchase class sets of books like this so without you, I simply would not be able to provide the literary study that I know is important and will be impactful to my students.","fullyFundedDate":1748017911366,"projectUrl":"project/5th-grade-book-set/9366106/","projectTitle":"5th Grade Book Set","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Eddings","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9779235"},{"teacherId":8353166,"projectId":8334207,"letterContent":"My class has been finding many creative ways to use our containers! I believe strongly in teaching with an emphasis on social justice, as well as integrating an arts based curriculum into the day. Thanks to you, we have some wonderful books to help inspire our art.
