These books have empowered our students to feel proud and inspired to overcome adversity. \r\n\r\nEvery morning we start our day with a story to help set the tone for the day. Because you helped fund this project, we were able to read stories of Mae Jemison's life in Mae Among the Stars and her journey to becoming an astronaut and Abdul's Story on his journey to overcome difficulties with reading and writing. \r\n\r\nWe thank you for your support and generous contributions to our classroom. The typical student can lose up to three months of academic momentum over the summer months if they do not practice the skills they worked hard to learn during the school year. This is known as the \"Summer Slide\". It can take up to two extra months in the beginning of the new school year for kids to catch up.\r\nWith a little work here and there each week over summer (math, reading, & writing) our students will maintain (and in some cases exceed) the academic success they worked hard to achieve.\r\nThe \"Book a Week\" summer reading program is unique because the kids voted on the ten titles that they most wanted to read (out of a list of over fifty). The students are excited to read the books that they voted for and are interested in. \r\nA book a week is not much to ask...there are so many ways to get this goal set up...kids can read on their own, with friends, on Zoom (Facetime), parents can read to them, they can listen to teachers read certain ones (online), or they can find an audio recording and listen to it.\r\nWhatever the case, because of you our second graders have a chance to take responsibility of their summer success and achievement in the new school year.\r\nThank you so much for supporting our kids and the second and third grade teachers at our school. The color printer and laminator allow me to create colorful, durable, and individualized learning materials that students can use again and again. From adapted worksheets and hands-on activities to matching cards, picture supports, and interactive learning tasks, these resources help make academic concepts easier to understand and practice. For example, students can use colorful picture cards to match objects, identify vocabulary, practice counting, and solve simple math problems. Laminated materials can be reused during small-group instruction and independent learning activities, giving students repeated opportunities to practice important skills at their own pace.\r\n\r\nThe visual charts are especially valuable in helping our students understand daily routines, follow directions, make choices, and build independence. For students who benefit from visual communication and structured routines, pictures and visual schedules can make the school day more predictable and accessible. For example, a student can use a visual schedule to see what activity comes next, follow a first-then chart to transition between tasks, or point to a picture to communicate a choice. These small steps can make a meaningful difference in students' confidence, participation, and independence.\r\n\r\nThe snacks are another thoughtful addition to our classroom. They help us support students during the school day and provide opportunities to practice everyday skills such as requesting, making choices, communicating preferences, and following classroom routines. For example, students can practice asking for a snack using words, gestures, pictures, or their communication devices. These everyday moments can become meaningful opportunities for communication, social interaction, and independence.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of teaching is watching students engage with materials designed to meet their individual needs. A student who successfully matches pictures, follows a visual schedule, completes a learning activity, or communicates a choice is making progress worth celebrating. Every small achievement matters, and having the right resources helps us create more opportunities for these successes.\r\nYour generosity goes beyond providing classroom supplies.
