Through Things Fall Apart, students explore cultural and societal norms, examining how tradition, colonialism, and personal identity shape communities. With Bronx Masquerade, students engage in discussions about teen societal issues—such as self-expression, peer pressure, and belonging—while learning how poetry and storytelling give voice to personal and collective experiences.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active, collaborative, and student-centered. We don't just read for plot—we read to question, connect, and create. Students annotate texts, engage in small group discussions, and respond through writing, art, and spoken word. These activities build comprehension, critical thinking, and empathy, helping students connect literature to their own lives and the world around them. Each reading session is designed to encourage inquiry and reflection, allowing students to see themselves and others in the stories they read.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have shown particular enthusiasm for these books. One student, who had previously struggled to engage with traditional literature, connected deeply with the characters in Bronx Masquerade and began writing her own poetry to express her experiences. Another group of students was captivated by Achebe's portrayal of Igbo culture in Things Fall Apart, sparking conversations about cultural pride and identity. These new texts have transformed reading from a passive activity into a personal journey, where every student can find a piece of themselves in the literature.","fullyFundedDate":1759844376785,"projectUrl":"project/together-we-can-inspire-a-love-of-readi/9790671/","projectTitle":"Together, we can inspire a love of reading and empower.","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Trevathan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6736042_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758772744310","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6736042"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2069","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":334,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":92,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":21,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":73,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"11.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":57.7,"schoolId":2069,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Belmont Preparatory High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Belmont Preparatory High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/belmont-preparatory-high-school/2069"}
