Our main topics have been examining themes, identifying figurative language, and analyzing characters. \r\nBeyond literary analysis, this text also provides lessons in empathy and perspective. Students are asked to consider how stereotypes and assumptions affect relationships and how understanding others' experiences can break down barriers. These are valuable life lessons that go hand in hand with the academic skills we are practicing. \r\nAs we continue through the novel, students will engage in discussions, writing activities, and projects that challenge them to think critically and express their ideas clearly. My goal is for them not only to grow as readers and writers but also to see how literature helps us better understand ourselves and the world around us.\r\nAs we read this novel together as a class, the students follow along with the audiobook. When students follow along in a book as it is being read aloud, they are strengthening multiple parts of the reading process at once. Reading and listening at the same time supports understanding. Students don't have to struggle to \"sound out\" every word, so they can focus more on the meaning of the text.\r\nSeveral students come to me before class to make sure we are reading from the book. They are excited to see what happens next!","fullyFundedDate":1743515670449,"projectUrl":"project/better-readers/9214135/","projectTitle":"Better Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Holcombe","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/amy-holcombe-read"},{"teacherId":8428005,"projectId":8706159,"letterContent":"I am incredibly grateful for your generous donation, which allowed me to provide my students with copies of The Giver. This novel has had a profound impact on my classroom, offering both a captivating story and an opportunity to introduce important life skills. Through The Giver, students have been able to explore themes of memory, individuality, and the complexity of human emotion. The book has sparked rich discussions about the role of choice in society, the importance of empathy, and how our understanding of the world shapes our identity. These discussions encourage critical thinking and help students better analyze the world around them, not just within the text, but also in their own lives.\r\n\r\nReading The Giver in my classroom has been an immersive and interactive experience. Students are eager to dive into each chapter, often pausing to reflect on the complex world Jonas inhabits. In our discussions, students practice analyzing symbolism, identifying character motivations, and connecting their own experiences to the moral dilemmas the characters face. Several students who were initially hesitant readers have found a new enthusiasm for this book's thought-provoking plot. One student, who has struggled with staying engaged in other books, has been particularly excited about the dystopian world and the mystery surrounding the Community, which has helped them stay focused and active in reading. Another student has shown a deeper understanding of how The Giver challenges ideas of control and freedom, eagerly contributing their insights during class conversations.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, The Giver has not only increased my students' love for reading but has also allowed them to develop valuable skills in critical thinking and reflection. I am so thankful for your investment in their education and can't wait to see how this book continues to inspire them.","fullyFundedDate":1734459763431,"projectUrl":"project/help-engage-reluctant-readers-with-the-g/8706159/","projectTitle":"Help Engage Reluctant Readers With The Giver!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Crabtree","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8428005_orig.jpg?crop=788,788,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1650983419047","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8428005"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6723","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":584,"numTeachers":49,"percentFrplEligible":75,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":52,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":19,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":68.5,"schoolId":6723,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Beech Springs Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Beech Springs Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/spartanburg-school-district-5/beech-springs-intermediate-school/6723"}
