We have been working with Indi over the last few weeks to help first graders learn about maps and motion. In Science, the first grade students are learning about motion and describing how to describe motion. Indi has been an awesome addition to our learning as students have been in charge of the actions and motions that the robot takes. I have noticed a huge increase in the use of scientific vocabulary in class! \r\nIn the future, we will be using Indi to learn about constellations in fourth grade, how things move in Kindergarten, the water cycle in third grade, and how energy can cause motion in fourth and fifth grades. The students have had to create a story for Indi involving where it had to go on the map and how it had to get there. The students had to create an algorithm that told Indi how to get from one location on the map to another. They have had so much learning how to work with Indi over the past few weeks and the projects have really pushed them to learn together and work together. Together, we were able to bring some amazing supplies into our STEM Lab. My students have been busy working on projects using the tools from the MakeDo kits including the cardboard saws, cutters, Scrus and much more. Before we went on break, some of my students in a STEM club got to use these tools to build a model of a nest to protect a \"dinosaur egg\" as we learned about these amazing prehistoric creatures. \r\nAs we continue through the year, students will be able to use these tools several times. Coming up, students about going to be building a parachute that can safely deliver a payload without damage. The students will be able to use these tools to safely cut out cardboard pieces for their parachutes. Additionally, Kindergarteners are learning to change matter and will be able to use these tools to cut and change cardboard into a variety of shapes and sizes. We are really looking forward to working with these tools throughout the years. Many students are learning new vocabulary and seeing new images they've never been exposed to, such as Venus fly traps. \r\n\r\nThe experiment kits are amazing and have most of the materials needed to conduct an experiment.
