They have already made a meaningful difference for my students, and I am thrilled to share how they are being used each day.\r\n\r\nOne of the most powerful tools has been the Calm Ball, which every single one of my students has used this year. Whether they are managing anxiety, big feelings, or tough moments, the Calm Ball has become a trusted part of their self‑regulation routine. It has helped many of them return to learning with confidence and calm.\r\n\r\nMy self-contained, non-speaking preschool students have especially benefited from the recording buttons. We use them during circle time to communicate core words, make choices, and share feelings. Watching a child press a button to confidently say \"more,\" \"I feel happy,\" or \"I want that one\" has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my year.\r\n\r\nStudents also love exploring the Emotions Coin Sorter, which has turned emotional learning into something visual, concrete, and fun. They delight in naming, sorting, and talking about the emotions represented.\r\n\r\nThe Montessori Busy Book has been another essential resource. It supports phonological awareness and early language concepts, but it has also become a calming tool during moments of frustration or sensory overwhelm. Its hands-on structure allows students to re-engage gently and successfully.\r\n\r\nThe light covers in my speech room have not only helped with sensory needs by softening harsh lighting, but they've also sparked conversations with students from preschool all the way through 5th grade. They often walk in, look up, and immediately want to talk about the designs—giving us unexpected opportunities to connect and build language.\r\n\r\nThe picture book A Day Without Words has been invaluable for introducing families and peers to the experiences of students who use alternative communication methods. It has become a bridge for understanding and empathy.\r\n\r\nFinally, the letter Magna-Tiles have been a huge hit. They make early phonological and phonemic awareness activities exciting and accessible for students who struggle with spelling. Building words with colorful tiles feels more like play than work, and that joy shows in their engagement.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, my students are communicating more, regulating better, exploring language with excitement, and thriving in ways that weren't possible before. Our next steps involve continuing to build foundational communication skills, expanding emotional vocabulary, and increasing independence with both AAC tools and early literacy skills.\r\n\r\nThank you again for giving my students the tools they need to grow. Your kindness is making a real difference in our classroom every single day.","fullyFundedDate":1746753888300,"projectUrl":"project/smiles-for-speech-therapy/9038872/","projectTitle":"Smiles for Speech Therapy!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bridget","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9729815"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_96615","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":752,"numTeachers":43,"percentFrplEligible":33,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":22,"percentWhite":52,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":14,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"17.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":76.3,"schoolId":96615,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Barnette Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Barnette Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/charlotte-mecklenburg-school-district/barnette-elementary-school/96615"}
