Each book was paired with a custom communication support we created. For example, our \"My Truck Is Stuck\" bookmark highlighted specific CORE vocabulary words from the story (like \"go,\" \"stop,\" \"help,\" and \"more\") and gave parents concrete tips for how to model language on their child's AAC device while reading together at home. We also created bilingual English/Spanish supports so families could use these tools in the language most comfortable for them.\r\n\r\nWhat makes these books special isn't just the stories - it's that they feature characters who use AAC and communicate in ways that look similar to our students. That matters for kids who rarely see themselves reflected in the books they read. During our trainings, we used the books to model exactly what AAC-supported reading looks like: pointing to symbols on the device, pausing to give the child time to respond, and narrating what's happening on the page using core words rather than book-specific vocabulary.\r\n\r\nParents were highly engaged in the learning. In feedback surveys, parent comfort using AAC supports with their child at home went from a 2.44 at the start of the year to a 4.0 by the end (1- Not yet comfortable to 5- Very comfortable, could use some new ideas). Their knowledge of CORE vocabulary grew from a 2.33 to a 3.4 (1 – Limited or no knowledge yet to 5 – Strong knowledge; open to learning new ideas). And 100% of participating families said the program had a significant impact on their child's communication and agreed that they would recommend it to other families.\r\n\r\nOne of the things parents reported most was increased communication attempts from their children at home, including one student who began independently using their device to request \"more\" during meals. That's exactly what this project was designed to do: give families the tools, the knowledge, and the confidence to support their child's voice beyond the school day.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us make that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1758696049711,"projectUrl":"project/communicationaac-books-for-parent-train/9748526/","projectTitle":"Communication/AAC Books for Parent Trainings to Support Minimally Speaking Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Folco","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5697710_orig.png?crop=453,453,x0,y63&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1602107788210","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-folco"},{"teacherId":8778964,"projectId":9135820,"letterContent":"My students were so excited when they saw the vacuum! It also allows us to create more art because we can easily clean up afterwards.\r\n It has also taught them responsibility, especially in regards to cleaning up after themselves, which is a vital life lesson that they will be able to use.
