English Learners are excited to see familiar stories and high-interest topics available in Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese, allowing them to enjoy reading without the frustration of having to navigate every word in English. For some students, reading in their native language gives them the confidence to choose a book independently, share what they are reading with friends, and see themselves as successful readers. The books also provide opportunities to build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, make connections between languages, and develop a lifelong love of reading.\r\n\r\nI have also seen students who are learning English use these books as a bridge between their home language and their new language. A student may recognize a familiar story in Spanish, for example, and then use that background knowledge to better understand the English version. Other students are challenging themselves to read a familiar story in a language they are learning, which makes language practice feel much more meaningful and fun. In our library, reading should be a choice that feels inviting rather than intimidating, and these new multilingual books are helping more students find books they are excited to pick up, read, and share.","fullyFundedDate":1773878869300,"projectUrl":"project/stories-without-borders-multilingual-bo/10011876/","projectTitle":"Stories Without Borders: Multilingual Books for Middle School Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mosca","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2292893_orig.jpg?crop=840,840,x1810,y1400&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1759845062554","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2292893"},{"teacherId":2292893,"projectId":9986016,"letterContent":"The new books and rotating display shelf have brought a lot of excitement to our library. Your support also provided a vacuum cleaner, which helps us keep the area clean, comfortable, and welcoming each day. Every item you helped provide has made a meaningful difference in creating a space designed with care and intention.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, our students now have a safe and supportive environment where they can take a break, regulate their emotions, and continue their learning feeling refreshed and confident. Middle school is a time when students are learning how to communicate, collaborate, and navigate relationships, and your support has given them meaningful opportunities to practice these skills in a calm, supportive environment.\r\n\r\nThe games, cards, puzzles, and Play-Doh you helped provide have had an immediate and powerful impact. Students work together at tables, take turns, solve problems, and engage in low-pressure conversations that build trust and cooperation. Games help students practice sportsmanship and respectful interaction, while puzzles encourage teamwork and patience. Play-Doh has been especially effective in helping students relax and connect—its hands-on nature lowers anxiety and allows conversations to unfold naturally.
