I have been able to launch novel studies successfully in my classroom with these books. The students have loved getting to know about Brian Robeson's survival skills within this story. I am so glad the kids have been able to read about a character close in age to them because it has made it a much more relatable experience for them as we read and engaged with the story to discuss the character's growth throughout the book.\r\nI have been able to teach several literacy state standards using this novel. For example, students were able to use this text to learn about literary elements such as setting, plot, theme, conflict, dialogue, point of view, character traits, as well as character types. We also used the writing standard of using literary quotes to support drawing inferences and conclusions about how the character Brian was feeling and dealing with his problems throughout the text. \r\nOverall, this was a very engaging novel, and I could tell my students loved their time spent reading it and digging deeper in the text to learn about ELA standards. We were able to wrap up our novel study by making dioramas of key scenes from the text depicting the setting which really helped my students get a grasp on the lay of the land and Brian's campsite as described within the story. Our first lesson was on Columbus and how the enslaved indigenous people. One of our books was able to give a perspective from the enslaved point of view. It opened their eyes to a new world.We mainly use the books provided as read aloud to model proficient reading, but also to introduce vocabulary and reinforce lessons learned in our Social Studies Weekly.\r\n\r\nYour generosity didn't just give us books; it gave my fourth graders a window into the world, a chance to see themselves in history, and the confidence to read complex, meaningful texts. We use them to work on nonfiction skills such as identifying the main idea and key details, using text features, learning new vocabulary, making inferences, and summarizing information. They are especially helpful for my English Learners because they provide pictures, diagrams, captions, headings, and other supports that help make new information easier to understand.\r\n\r\nReading with Scholastic News is very hands-on and interactive! We read the articles together, look closely at the pictures and text features, discuss new vocabulary, and stop throughout the article to talk about what we are learning. Students get opportunities to read independently and with partners, and we talk about the information we learned afterward. It has been a great way to combine reading instruction with science and give my students a reason to be excited about reading nonfiction.\r\n\r\nMy English Learners have really enjoyed the Scholastic News because the topics are interesting and the pictures and text features help them understand what they are reading. I have students who may be hesitant when given a traditional nonfiction passage, but they are much more excited to pick up a Scholastic News and explore it. They love learning about animals, science, space, and other real-world topics, and they are so proud when they can tell me something new they learned. It has been wonderful to see them becoming more confident with nonfiction reading!\r\n\r\nThank you so much for helping bring these magazines into our classroom.
