When the students first saw the new play-doh, kinetic sand, and animal toys, they were thrilled! They could not wait to explore the materials, and the excitement in the room was contagious. What may seem like simple sensory tools have quickly become powerful resources that support both learning and emotional growth.\r\n Throughout the school day, students use these materials during learning centers, small-group instruction, and brain breaks. One of the most meaningful ways we have used them is alongside our new Second Step Social-Emotional Learning curriculum. As students learn about identifying emotions, managing strong feelings, and building positive relationships, the play-doh and kinetic sand provide a calming, hands-on outlet that helps them stay focused and engaged during discussions and activities. I've watched students use the materials while talking about their feelings, practicing self-regulation strategies, and working collaboratively with classmates. These tools have helped create a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.\r\n As the year continues, we will keep using these sensory materials to support academic learning, creativity, and social-emotional development. They will be incorporated into literacy and math lessons, problem-solving activities, and SEL experiences that help students build confidence and resilience. Many of our students experience sensory processing differences that can make it difficult to remain regulated and focused throughout the school day. The bubble tube has provided a calming visual and sensory experience that supports students during moments of dysregulation, anxiety, or overstimulation. Students are often able to use the calming area proactively or with adult support to de-escalate, return to baseline more quickly, and successfully re-engage in classroom activities. The addition of this sensory support has also contributed to a more peaceful classroom environment overall by reducing the frequency and intensity of behavioral escalations.\r\n\r\nThe headphones have similarly become an essential tool in supporting student success and access to learning. Many students in our classroom are highly sensitive to environmental noise, transitions, and unpredictable sounds, which can increase stress and interfere with participation. Providing students with access to headphones has allowed them to access digital content in a more engaging way. We used the materials to explore color mixing, patterns, and following multi-step directions, all while expressing individuality through art. One of the most special moments was watching each student proudly reveal their finished shirt—every design was unique, and their excitement was contagious!\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were thrilled. Many of them had never had the opportunity to create something like this before, and their curiosity and enthusiasm were immediate. They eagerly asked questions, carefully planned their designs, and worked together to help one another. It was incredible to see their confidence grow as they realized they could create something beautiful with their own hands.\r\n\r\nThis project became an especially meaningful part of our end-of-year field trip. Students proudly wore their tie-dye shirts, beaming as they showed off their creations. It was a joyful moment that brought our class together and gave them something special to celebrate.
