I am truly grateful for your generosity and for all of the resources you helped bring into our mental health space.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, the familiarity and softness of this space is just as important as the tools within it. Coming into my office may be one of the few moments in their day when they can take a break from academic pressures, social and relational stressors, or other challenging dynamics happening outside of the office. Having a space that feels calm, predictable, and welcoming gives them an opportunity to slow down, regulate, and simply be present before returning to the rest of their school day.\r\nMy students were excited and curious when they first saw the new materials, especially the sandtray, miniatures, sensory tools, and other hands-on activities. It was wonderful watching them explore the different resources and begin finding the tools that felt most comfortable for them.\r\n\r\nThe sandtray has already become one of the most meaningful resources in our sessions. I work with students who sometimes have a difficult time putting their experiences or emotions into words. I have already had students use the sand and miniatures to create scenes and share their stories in a way that felt natural to them. Sometimes creating and playing first makes it easier for the words to come later. It has been really special to see students realize that there isn't just one way to communicate what they are feeling.\r\n\r\nWe are also using the Zen garden, breathing tool, LEGO pieces, conversation cards, stamps, journals, and other sensory materials to practice mindfulness, grounding, emotional expression, and coping skills. Students can have something calming to do with their hands while we talk, which can make sessions feel more comfortable and less intimidating.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, I will continue introducing students to different strategies so they can discover what works best for them. My hope is that the skills we practice together whether that is journaling, mindfulness, grounding, challenging negative thoughts, creative expression become tools they can use independently outside of my office.\r\n\r\nEven the softer lighting, white noise, and calming décor have helped make this space feel warm and inviting. I wanted my students to have a place at school where they can slow down, feel supported, and know that it is okay to simply be who they are.\r\n\r\nThank you for making that possible. These resources are already being used and appreciated, and I know they will continue to support many students throughout the school year. Already, students have used the 3D printer to create custom lab materials, prototypes, and support their participation in competitions outside of school. Students have been able to truly develop real-life skills that will serve them not only during their time in high school, but also in the years beyond the classroom. Even students who have never been exposed to a 3D printer have shown interest in learning how to use it, which could unlock future career paths! They are actively using all of the materials from the Lego wall and kinetic sand as ways to not only help with their need for sensory regulation, but also tap into their creative sides as well. These have been very popular and have helped keep productive break times and learning times for my students with Autism. \r\nOf all the donations received, the bubble wall has been the clear winner for the students. I have had students independently walk into the sensory and stem sanctuary that have never shown interest in entering or engaging with any particular items before. They are taking the time to decompress, soothe themselves and gain visual impact that helps them to focus better. The galaxy projector added that nice touch to give the feeling of being in another place. \r\nOverall, I would not have been able to provide these items and sensory learning experiences for my students had you not been so generous with your donations.
