I truly love teaching fractions to students and having the fraction tiles and number lines at their fingertips allows them to become familiar with and gain a conceptual understanding of fractions. \r\n\r\nOn day one, we had a fraction tile unveiling to discuss your generosity and share the best ways to care for the materials so that 4th graders would benefit from them for years to come. Then the play began. Students were able to manipulate the fraction tiles and to start discovering equivalencies. In the past, I had to print a black and white template for the students to color and cut. There was value in that, but sometimes accuracy was lost in the cutting and it was hard to maintain the tiles through the entire unit.\r\n\r\nOnce students became familiar with the manipulatives they were made available to them for lessons and independent work for finding equivalencies and comparing and ordering fractions. These materials combined the number lines became invaluable in a lesson on benchmark fractions, when students were to determine if a given fraction was closer to 0, closer to 1/2, or closer to 1. It was an activity that bolstered mathematical reasoning and justification. Students were having lively discussions and debates about what they thought to be true, especially for the fraction 2/5. When they couldn't come to an agreement, the tiles and number lines were there to support or refute their reasoning. \r\n\r\nI look forward to using these materials to bridge the relationship between fractions and decimals in our next unit as well as in years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1765239201636,"projectUrl":"project/fraction-frenzy/9924818/","projectTitle":"Fraction Frenzy","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Maher","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10361671"},{"teacherId":6690802,"projectId":6803610,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our students now have exciting new ways to build strength, balance, and confidence through movement!
