I am beyond thankful for your generous donations. The students are always excited to play with new \"toys,\" and these toys truly have a positive impact. These hands on activities magically motivate my students to learn new skills or practice those that may be difficult.\r\n\r\n The materials donated can be used in a variety of ways for the early childhood special education students I work with. They can independently explore and play with the sequencing tiles, puzzles, games and sorting activities provided. And, with direct instruction, these materials have been used to: coach students to better understand higher level skills such as rhyming or sequencing; expose students to these specific concepts; and practice labeling pictures and improve vocabulary for students who are not yet ready for higher level literacy skills. Beyond literacy, these materials aid in other areas of development, including social skills (sharing, turn taking, cooperative play, etc.) and cognitive development (problem solving skills). The students I work with learn best using multimodal tools that engage young learners using various senses (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), which supports memory retention and comprehension. \r\n\r\n Repetition is also important for the special education learners I teach to facilitate the retention of concepts. These tools will be used again and again to practice and best support not only a foundation of important early childhood skills, (including literacy, social and cognitive), but also a love of learning as they engage in some of their favorite activities. The response from the students has been nothing short of positive, and they look forward to participating in these tools regularly. There is nothing better than supporting students with smiles on their faces! These hands-on materials allow them to physically build letters, match sounds to pictures, and practice listening for beginning sounds in words. One special moment was watching a student who typically hesitates to participate eagerly construct the letter in his name using the manipulatives and proudly announce its sound to the group. The tactile nature of the materials has helped many of my learners stay engaged and better understand concepts that were once abstract.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate—they couldn't wait to touch, explore, and start building. The colorful pieces and game-like format made literacy feel like play, which is exactly how our young learners learn best. Many of my students, especially those with language and developmental delays, were more willing to take risks, try new sounds, and collaborate with their peers.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we are using these resources to strengthen skills like identifying letters in their names, isolating sounds, and beginning to blend simple words. Our next steps include incorporating the materials into more structured literacy routines and expanding into guided activities where students build words together and connect sounds to meaningful vocabulary from our classroom themes. Because of your generosity, my students are developing confidence, independence, and a strong foundation for reading success. Thank you for helping make these joyful learning moments possible!","fullyFundedDate":1764719247637,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-literacy-for-little-hands/9908486/","projectTitle":"Hands-On Literacy for Little Hands","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stephanie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10356401_orig.jpg?crop=924,924,x167,y206&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763595580397","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10356401"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_120988","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":52,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":25,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":50,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - Pre-K","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":71.3,"schoolId":120988,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about APPLES Early Childhood Educational Center on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"APPLES Early Childhood Educational Center","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/connecticut/stamford-public-schools/apples-early-childhood-educational-center/120988"}
