The variety of new books allows students to practice essential reading skills such as making inferences, analyzing theme, developing vocabulary in context, and building stamina through sustained independent reading. Because students are able to choose books that match their interests and reading levels, they are more engaged and willing to take risks with challenging texts.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom now looks purposeful and student-centered. Students participate in daily independent reading time, small-group discussions, and written responses where they apply comprehension strategies we explicitly teach. These books have also supported meaningful conversations, allowing students to connect texts to their own lives and to the world around them.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who previously struggled to find books they enjoyed are especially thriving. Some of my reluctant readers are now asking for extra reading time and recommending books to classmates. English language learners and students with IEPs have benefited from having accessible options that still feel age-appropriate and engaging. Because of your donation, my students now have access to Chasing Lincoln's Killer, a high-interest narrative nonfiction text that allows us to build critical literacy skills in meaningful and engaging ways. Many of our donors love to read, and these books provide an opportunity for students to experience the same excitement while also developing academic skills that support their long-term success. Through this text, students are learning to identify central ideas, analyze plot development in nonfiction, and make inferences using historical evidence. The book's structure, which weaves together primary-source excerpts with fast-paced narrative storytelling, enables us to explore author's craft, point of view, and how text structure contributes to meaning. In addition, the historical context surrounding the Civil War and the events leading to Lincoln's assassination gives students repeated opportunities to practice evaluating cause-and-effect relationships and considering how different perspectives shape our understanding of history. These literacy lessons align closely with our state standards and help strengthen students' readiness for the increasingly complex texts they will encounter in high school and beyond.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is an active and collaborative learning experience, and having a class set of these books has made a tremendous impact on how we approach instruction. Students now participate fully in close-reading routines, annotating the text as they read, marking unfamiliar vocabulary, and identifying key details that support their comprehension. Because each student has their own copy, I am now able to implement more small-group reading structures where students can pause, reflect, discuss, and make predictions about the unfolding events. We also incorporate quick-writes, partner discussions, and text-based questioning that help students build deeper connections to the material. Rather than passively listening to a read-aloud or sharing limited copies, students are now fully engaged with the text in front of them, which has significantly increased participation and confidence. This shift has created a more equitable reading environment where every student has the tools necessary to succeed.\r\n\r\nThe impact of these new books is already visible among my students. Several reluctant readers—particularly those who struggle to stay engaged with traditional nonfiction—have expressed genuine excitement about the fast-paced, real-life mystery at the center of Chasing Lincoln's Killer. Students who typically hesitate to participate in discussions are now raising their hands to share predictions or ask thoughtful questions about the motives and decisions of historical figures. Others who are naturally drawn to history have been eager to dive deeper into the events surrounding Lincoln's assassination, often making connections to prior knowledge or additional research. Having their own books has empowered these students to take ownership of their learning, and it has allowed them to feel confident and included during every lesson.
