My students read this novel 1st semester, but had to share books with another class due to not having enough copies to take home. Having enough copies for each student will allow students to read at their own pace and at home if they miss class. \r\n\r\nWe read To Kill a Mockingbird in class, so this is a nice modern-day companion novel to that text. This memoir has been impactful for my first semester students. They came into reading the text skeptical, and left the novel being inspired to continue reading Jeannette's story. \r\n\r\nI was on maternity leave and had my students complete the study on this book with my notes and imput. When I came back from leave, I had several students approach me with their adoration for the book, as well as a couple who stated they purchased their own copies. \r\n\r\nIt's rewarding as a teacher when you find a book that students enjoy, and that they want to read.
