Many of my students were against reading, because they thought that reading was boring or it didn't have any value. When I laid out these new books on the desks, they were enthralled by the nice covers and constantly asked if they could take them home to read. Although students have constantly heard the phrase \"don't judge a book by its cover,\" they were inspired to read the books that looked the most new.\r\n\r\nIn addition to building their curiosity, I planned to use these books in a \"Speed Book Dating\" activity where students read 6 books for five minutes and determine which one they want to read during independent reading time. I did this activity to improve their reading comprehension levels and encourage them to read for fun outside of my class, because it'll teach them lessons that they can't learn from teachers. \r\n\r\nNow, many of my students look forward to independent reading time because they're invested in the stories they're reading. They've been digging, planting, cleaning, and learning about local plants, all while transforming our school into a much-needed green space. One moment that stands out is when they first got their hands on the new equipment—there was a lot of excitement and a few goofy moments, but their energy and enthusiasm are undeniable. They're thrilled to have the tools they need and no longer have to wait for outside help. This sense of ownership is really giving them pride in the project.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we'll continue to work on the garden while tying it into our environmental club's projects and deepening our engagement with the local community. Students will gain more hands-on experience with ecosystems and the importance of native plants. We're also preparing for a community clean-up event in January, where students will take the lead in organizing and rallying the community.
