Having an alternative way to learn has opened new doors for many of them.\r\n\r\nThey are grateful—and excited—to no longer rely on reading captions or holding their Chromebooks up to their ears just to hear their lessons. Thanks to you, learning has become more comfortable, more accessible, and far more enjoyable.\r\n\r\nWe are incredibly fortunate to have donors like you who believe in and support our students. These new books were selected because they were rich in diversity, which reflects my student population. It is so important for students to see and read about characters and experiences that they can relate to because it helps them feel seen and valued. Furthermore, having a wide variety of diverse books helps all students develop empathy and understand different perspectives. These books are prompting engaging conversations and questions that promote critical thinking skills. The students are thinking about social issues while making connections between the books and their own lives and worlds. For some students, reading diverse books such as these are a way to help them make sense of what they experience themselves.\r\n\r\nIn my library, reading is the top priority! Students are often encouraged by their teachers to choose specific types of books (nonfiction by topic, for example). However, students are always able to select books based on their interests. To help them, I've spent a lot of time teaching them how to access the online catalog to build their self-sufficiency in finding books. I have different displays up throughout the year for them to see a variety of books. There are many different seating arrangements to help feel welcomed and comfortable; if you visit my library, you may see students sitting on the couch, in bean bag chairs, or at the tables. My goal is for everyone to feel like the library is a place for them.\r\n\r\nYou might have heard the phrase, \"There's room on the shelf for everyone.\" As a public school librarian, I work hard to make that come true. When students see books that they can relate to, they are drawn to them. That is what I am seeing with these new books. My very diverse population is enjoying the very diverse new books!\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping me give my students the opportunity to read more diverse books. Your donation will impact not only this year's students, but also the students to come. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our future leaders.","fullyFundedDate":1728017238637,"projectUrl":"project/eliminate-screen-time-with-books-and-gam/8851763/","projectTitle":"Eliminate Screen Time With Books and Games","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Haifley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9785870_orig.jpg?crop=934,934,x336,y221&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727895140554","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9785870"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_24890","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":815,"numTeachers":35,"percentFrplEligible":79,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":13,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":77,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"23.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":83.3,"schoolId":24890,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Alexander Hamilton Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Alexander Hamilton Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/long-beach-unified-school-district/alexander-hamilton-middle-school/24890"}
