From the moment they found out that our project was funded they were very excited to receive the packages and dive head first into raising caterpillars. \r\n\r\nWe received them on a Friday afternoon right before students were leaving to go home. I gave them the task of picking the perfect name for their caterpillar. That weekend I prepared the caterpillars in the cups with plenty food and space. The following Monday students came in with their name prepared and I wrote them on their cups and each student placed them in their cubby. Daily students would pull them down to do a daily journal where they measured, drew a picture, checked off what they observe in the cup, and checked which stage the caterpillar was in. We had a set of 6 caterpillars that we placed in our Science and Discovery center and students would play with the life cycle materials while they observed them. During the chrysalis stage we were on spring break and that gave them plenty of time to change into the beautiful butterflies we knew they were going to be. By the time we returned we had 9 butterflies flying around and tasting fruit and sugar water. By the middle of the week all the butterflies were out and thriving. The students were amazed to see their long proboscis and their compound eyes. We ended the study with a Butterfly Release and it was nice to see the students observing them in their new environment. \r\n\r\nWe currently have our last class project live and with that project we plan to have a countdown for the last 10 days of school. Students will have a bubble day, popsicle day, popcorn day, chalk day, beach ball autograph day, drink day, and so much more. They were able to take the other gifts (puzzle, coloring book, crayons, and book) home to enjoy with their families.\r\n\r\nThe screaming \"I have a gift\", \"I got a present\", \"Look at our presents\" gave me that \"Christmas Morning\" feeling that parents get when everything comes together and they get to see those happy faces.\r\n\r\nI do have another project posted for manipulatives and the use of these materials will seem like play for our students, but the use of manipulatives gives us the opportunity to cater to different learning styles, while allowing students to learn in ways that work best for them. \r\n\r\nAgain, I would like to say thank you for your contribution. Our students have enjoyed helping out during our morning message where they get to track the sentence to find a certain letter and circle it. They also actually enjoy wiping the board after we are all done. Our classroom interest areas are color coded to help students remain in their intended area. The floor is labeled with the tape and, the area where they put their name has the color of the interest areas they are engaging in. \r\n\r\nWhen we received the packages the students were overjoyed and eager to see what would be coming out of the box next. There were lots of oohs, awe's, and them saying I can't wait to use those. They have so many new materials to choose from and the treasure box items have been an exciting choice each Friday. \r\n\r\nMy next for our class? We have a project up for engaging manipulatives to help master math skills we are learning daily. I also have a great opportunity to attend a conference at the Ron Clark Academy.
