As a self-contained special education classroom, many of my students are autistic, minimally verbal or nonverbal, and learn best through sensory-rich activities. These new materials have quickly become a meaningful part of our daily routine.\r\n\r\nThe excitement on my students' faces when they first saw the new sensory materials was unforgettable. They immediately wanted to explore, touch, and interact with everything. Students who are often hesitant to participate became more engaged, while others used their AAC devices, gestures, or vocalizations to request turns and communicate with their peers. It has been amazing to watch these resources naturally encourage communication, social interaction, and learning.\r\n\r\nWe are using the materials during our small-group lessons, sensory centers, and independent work time to target each student's IEP goals, including communication, fine motor skills, early literacy, math, and social skills. During our ocean-themed summer learning, the sensory materials have helped bring our lessons to life, allowing students to practice vocabulary, answer questions, follow directions, and explore new concepts through play.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, these resources will remain an important part of our classroom. We will keep using them to build communication, independence, and confidence while creating meaningful learning experiences that are fun, motivating, and accessible for every child.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and investing in their success. One especially meaningful moment was during a small-group activity where students used the materials to make choices and participate in a hands-on matching task. For several of my students who are nonverbal, this was a big win—they were able to show understanding and communicate their preferences without frustration. Seeing them stay engaged and proud of themselves was incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their reactions were immediate and joyful. They were drawn to the colors, textures, and hands-on components, and many were eager to explore right away. Even students who typically struggle with attention were motivated to sit, touch, and interact. The excitement carried over into our routines, and the materials quickly became a favorite part of the day.\r\n\r\nThanks to our donors, the next steps for our students include using these resources to build early literacy, communication, and social skills through structured play and guided activities. We will continue incorporating them into individual and small-group lessons to support goal progress, increase independence, and encourage meaningful communication.
