Our school serves students who have struggled in traditional comprehensive school settings and who need additional academic, emotional, and behavioral support to be successful. Our students arrive with diverse backgrounds and experiences, and many have faced significant challenges. Because of this, ALBA is deeply committed to a trauma-informed approach—one that prioritizes healing, resilience, and personal growth.\r\n\r\nThe counseling center is a vital part of this mission, and thanks to your generous donations, it has become a safe, calming, and restorative space for our students. The new resources are being used daily to help students regulate their emotions, reset their mindset, and reengage in learning. Sensory items support students when they are feeling overwhelmed or dysregulated, teaching them healthy and developmentally appropriate self-regulation skills. Calming lamps, diffusers, and water features create a peaceful environment where students can slow down, breathe, and regain a sense of control. Fidgets and mindfulness coloring activities give students constructive outlets to manage stress and big emotions, while sanitizing wipes ensure all shared materials remain clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.\r\n\r\nWhen students walk into the counseling center and see the new materials, their reactions are immediate and meaningful. Students often comment on how peaceful the room feels and ask to use specific tools that help them feel grounded. For some, simply sitting near the calming lamp or using a fidget has helped de-escalate strong emotions and allowed them to return to class feeling more focused and confident.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, students are now able to practice self-regulation skills they can carry beyond the counseling center. Our next steps include continuing to teach students how to independently identify which tools best support them and how to apply these coping strategies in the classroom and throughout their day. These resources are not just helping students in the moment—they are building lifelong skills that support academic success, emotional well-being, and positive social interactions.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has given you a glimpse into our counseling space and the meaningful work happening within it. More importantly, it has given our students the tools they need to feel supported, valued, and capable. Thank you for believing in our mission and in the incredible students we serve. Your support is making a lasting and transformative impact.","fullyFundedDate":1757565874444,"projectUrl":"project/a-place-to-breath-building-calm-one-st/9581169/","projectTitle":"A Place to Breathe: Building Calm, One Step at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Riccio","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8072381_orig.png?crop=256,256,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755554579735","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8072381"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_67276","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":39,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":86,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":14,"percentWhite":7,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":71,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"4.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":57.9,"schoolId":67276,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Alba High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Alba High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-diego-unified-school-district/alba-high-school/67276"}
