With your help, my students will now have access to more personal narratives to read, enjoy and learn from. Knowing that there are many paths forward in life can offer students a plethora of options as they navigate their own futures.\r\n\r\nMany of these stories show lives disrupted by war and other adverse experiences. Growing up is hard enough, but adding social, political or personal unrest makes the task even harder. I know my students will benefit from reading the stories of those who survived to tell the tale.\r\n\r\nNow more than ever we need to give young people the tools they will need to transform the world into a place that is beneficial and safe for all: empathy, understanding, activism and love might just be the way forward.","fullyFundedDate":1746787206305,"projectUrl":"project/the-arc-of-a-life-studying-narrative-no/9050138/","projectTitle":"The Arc of a Life: Studying Narrative Nonfiction","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Piazza","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6270466_orig.jpg?crop=827,827,x0,y124&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1615095498284","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lisa-piazza"},{"teacherId":2670288,"projectId":9297556,"letterContent":"Receiving new books in the classroom is always one of the most exciting days of the year! \r\n\r\nThe books purchased by this project were selected because the authors were women or POC. The books were also selected for their high-interest for young people while also being appropriate but challenging literature. Students in my class read books independently from class as homework. This gives students greater choice in their required reading. Each student can now select from the new and diverse titles purchased by this project.\r\n\r\nThe goal of my project was to diversify the reading materials available to my students. I am confident that these new books will provide a broader perspective of the world for my students. Several students have begun reading the new titles and I can see it has already been successful. My student's engagement with the book has been incredible. It's always exciting to find a text that resonates so strongly with young readers. The themes of identity, trauma, survival, and family really strike a chord with them, and many students find themselves reflecting on their own histories and experiences in the process.\r\n\r\nThey've gained a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and its lasting impact, but what surprises me most is how they also connect to the personal, everyday struggles depicted in the story. They've even found moments of unexpected humor, which adds a powerful human dimension to such a serious topic.\r\n\r\nSome students have had strong opinions about the choices the characters make—especially Vladek—and it's been fascinating to see them wrestle with those moral complexities. It's clear the book is challenging them to think critically and empathetically.\r\n\r\nI'm so grateful for your support, and I'm really looking forward to the next group of students diving into this remarkable work.","fullyFundedDate":1738992306655,"projectUrl":"project/book-clubs-graphic-novels/8882453/","projectTitle":"Book Clubs: Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Holmes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2670288_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1476489948300","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/holmes-christopher"},{"teacherId":7537445,"projectId":9050904,"letterContent":"These materials have made it possible for us to make math more meaningful. In one activity, we used them to measure the temperature of water as it cooled during class. While collecting data, students practiced essential graphing skills. They then analyzed the data to learn about creating accurate graphs, asymptotes, and exponential decay. In short, students didn't just solve textbook math problems—they were encouraged to think critically and explore real-world questions, such as, \"Does my coffee cool at a consistent rate?\"\r\n\r\nAdditionally, the wall graph has been a huge improvement in our classroom. We frequently create graphs, and often, we need one large enough for the entire class to see. Drawing a large accurate graph on a whiteboard is difficult and time-consuming, so this tool has graphing tool has already proven invaluable. Even though it's new, it has been used on multiple occasions—it's truly a game-changer!\r\n\r\nThe impact of these materials on student learning has been significant. Engagement was high, students grasped difficult concepts, and misconceptions were reduced. I could tell this approach was effective because students performed well on subsequent quizzes and, in following lessons, asked high-level questions that demonstrated strong conceptual understanding.\r\n\r\nThank you again!!","fullyFundedDate":1736787663492,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-experiments-in-math-class/9050904/","projectTitle":"Hands-on Experiments in Math Class!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. DeRobbio","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7537445_orig.jpg?crop=1397,1397,x0,y218&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754155215983","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7537445"},{"teacherId":7537445,"projectId":8505808,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation earlier this year! We do lit circles a few times a year. I offer students a choice between 5-7 books. They span a range of interests - the books you funded! - from graphic novel (Maus), to adventure (Life of Pi), to relevant nonfiction (Accountable), to current young adult (The perks of Being a Wallflower), to classic lit (Jane Eyre). This year I also added a few from our school textbook room: autobiographical (The Other Wes Moore) and more classic lit (Great Expectations). Within a structured weekly routine, students will use the analytic skills they learned fist semester and read, discuss and finally present these books to the class. Some students have already begun and I am so excited to see the results later in the spring semester. The book was extremely powerful and led to many thoughtful class discussions about how the impact of slavery impacts our society today. Not only was Douglass' narrative extremely beneficial to prepare my students for the rhetorical analysis section of the AP test, but students were captivated by his story and told me that they felt like they understood a piece of history that they could not have understood simply from a history class alone. \r\n\r\nFor our unit, we learned about Douglass' techniques to persuade his audience and practiced close readings to analyze the power of word choice. This unit helped to solidify concepts we learned earlier in the year and helped my students to feel confident about the AP test in May. During our Socratic seminar, my students led their own discussion in which they talked about how this book is currently being targeted as a banned book in some states and why it is on that list. They also talked about the idea of reparations for slavery and how his story illustrates that through education there is always hope for a better future. My students truly found his words inspiring. \r\n\r\nThank you again for giving me the opportunity to share this powerful narrative with my students.
