Our three nature sensory bins, Bugs & Dirt, Pond & Water, and Garden & Plants, along with our new Tuff Tray, have transformed how our 17 preschoolers with autism and developmental delays experience the outdoor classroom.\r\n\r\nWhat used to be an underused shared space is now a regular part of our day. Students dig through sand and soil, catch and observe bugs with their magnifiers and bug viewers, pour and scoop water, and handle jumbo animal figures, all while working on the IEP goals that matter most for them: sensory regulation, fine motor strength, and communication. Because every bin is paired with our AAC system, even our most emerging communicators have new, concrete things to talk about. A tortoise figure or a handful of play sand becomes a chance to request, label, or comment, sometimes for the very first time.\r\n\r\nFor children who are still learning what it feels like to be calm and safe at school, this kind of open-ended, child-led exploration matters enormously. Nature doesn't ask a child to sit still or perform on cue. It invites them to touch, notice, and wonder, and that invitation is exactly what our students need to grow.","fullyFundedDate":1778786837435,"projectUrl":"project/learning-outside-nature-sensory-explora/10199125/","projectTitle":"Learning Outside: Nature Sensory Exploration for Our ECSE Preschoolers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Dani","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4532802_orig.jpg?crop=1768,1768,x0,y247&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1614977970998","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/dmbosman"},{"teacherId":4532802,"projectId":10122042,"letterContent":"The \"Hands-On, Minds-On\" sensory materials have become a cornerstone of our daily learning environment. We are currently using these resources during our small group sessions to help students remain focused and regulated throughout the school day. These tactile tools provide the perfect foundation for modeling language and practicing essential social skills as students share and explore together.\r\n\r\nThe reaction from the children has been wonderful to witness; they truly love exploring and manipulating the hands-on materials. Most importantly, these resources allow for more \"messy play,\" which is a vital and favorite part of how our youngest learners process the world around them.
