A lot of books in our library are well beyond their current reading levels, but I want each of them to know that reading is for them too. They immediately wanted to explore the books, talk about the stories, and imagine the projects we could create together. Their excitement reminded me how powerful it is to give students materials that reflect their curiosity and invite them to learn.\r\n\r\nWe are using the Indigenous picture books during our read-alouds and classroom discussions to explore themes of community, family, belonging, stewardship, and respect. After reading, students are creating hands-on art projects inspired by the stories and sharing their ideas with classmates. These activities give students opportunities to practice literacy skills while also building creativity, communication, collaboration, and empathy.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments has been watching students make connections between the stories and their own lives. They eagerly share family traditions, ask thoughtful questions, and listen to one another's experiences.
