I see nearly all of my students for direct reading instruction, as they struggle with reading and need specialized techniques and explicit instruction. I kept my project a secret until the package arrived. We received our chair for the quiet corner first. They were excited to take a turn sitting in this chair while reading a book or working on their clipboard. Alternative seating helps make learning fun and a break from sitting in a hard chair and desk all day. This motivated them to do what they needed to do to earn a chance to use the chair \r\n\r\nBecause they do not read at grade level, many are unable to read chapter books like their peers in general education. The chapter book we ordered is written as a decodable book, meaning it uses phonics rules taught in school to decode and read the words. It is very motivating for them to pick up a chapter book and read it successfully. They love the story and are asking to get the others in the series. Nothing makes my heart happier than hearing my students ask to read and to get more books. Typically, they don't enjoy reading as it is so hard for them. \r\n\r\nAll of my students attend some subjects in their general education class. They come across words they don't know how to sound out yet, or they read them so slowly that they can't comprehend what they are reading very well. The Scanmarker Air is a useful device that allows students to read their assignments. When they encounter a word they cannot decode, they can use the pen to scan it, and it will read it aloud. I teach multiple grades simultaneously, so I am often unavailable when they need help. The pen gives them independence and allows them to keep working without wasting time waiting for me to be available. Other times, I encourage them to use it for words they can't figure out. For harder material, they may use it to read a paragraph and then re-read it independently, having learned the words while listening to the pen and reading along. It can even read legible handwriting, which they find exciting, as the pen reads their writing aloud. \r\n\r\nYour generosity has made a big difference for them. I see them excited to complete their work when a new alternative seating option becomes available. They are reading in their free time more because of these items. They love the new reading chair and the pen that gives them independence; it is fun, cool technology that helps them. They are encouraged to develop their own abilities by reading the engaging chapter book independently. The more they read, the better readers they become. It creates many more opportunities for them here at school and in the future. \r\n\r\nWe appreciate your support, and many students this year and in the future will benefit from these items.","fullyFundedDate":1757734415265,"projectUrl":"project/success-can-breed-more-success/9693491/","projectTitle":"Success Can Breed More Success","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Starkey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10229821_orig.jpg?crop=403,403,x343,y131&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1773627589310","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10229821"},{"teacherId":990548,"projectId":9631025,"letterContent":"My students and I are so grateful for the Teachers Pay Teachers gift card! Thus far we have purchased some cute ghost, mummy, and turkey crafts to celebrate the holidays. The finished products look festive and bright covering our speech therapy walls and bulletin board, and the crafts serve as excellent at-home practice resources when taken down. Through use of the gift card, we have also purchased a few Boom Learning games that we utilize on the computer. The students greatly enjoy \"shooting baskets\" and searching for hidden treasure when using these interactive games that help promote their speech and language skills. The activities are perfect for enhancing their language skills as there are ample opportunities to target early academic concepts such as colors, shapes, and letters as well as more advanced vocabulary such as qualitative concepts and verbs. The students greatly enjoy pressing the buttons on the vending machine and watching their selected items drop out of the bottom slot. I love that the activity encourages the students to make requests using descriptive language (e.g., I want the cookies on the top shelf.). An added bonus to the vending machine- there is enough space for me to add articulation cards and other small objects so the kiddos can practice numerous speech-language skills at once. The Woodpecker Feeding toy is great for fine motor practice, and my youngsters love creating and talking about the scenes when they use both the Melissa and Doug Take-Along Town and Magnetic Matching picture game.\r\nTruly, I cannot thank you enough for these new resources. We have only had them for a short time, and the students absolutely love them.
