Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kindergarten students are such an exciting group of learners with mixed interests, abilities, and goals. My students are learning all the foundational skills. My students learn best when the lessons are interactive and animated. All my students come from disadvantaged homes, and half of them are English Language Learners.
My Project
Art can help children learn and practice skills like patterning and cause and effect (i.e., “If I push very hard with a crayon the color is darker.”). They can also practice critical thinking skills by making a mental plan or picture of what they intend to create and following through on their plan.
Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness.
Visual arts teach learners about color, layout, perspective, and balance.
During distance learning, I have taught a few art lessons. The students only have crayons at home so the lessons are limited. If my students had oil pastels, craft paper, watercolor paints and brushes, I could expand the variety of lessons I teach them through Zoom, which I know would excite them tremendously. It would feel like we were face to face at school.
