My Students
My students are all English Language Learners, new to this country within the last two to three years. From Guatemala, Vietnam, Yemen, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and the Philippines, they are enrolled in my "Newcomer" class for one period a day. They join their English fluent peers for six other courses.
My newcomer students are eager scholars even as they deal with poverty, immigration difficulties, separation from family/friends, violence and PTSD.
They work hard in class but often struggle to stay focused for a variety of reasons. They are less likely to have parents who can help them in the evenings with schoolwork due to language barriers and/or work schedules. They may be working full-time jobs themselves and sleeping very little at night. In some cases, my students have no adult at home because they are in America unaccompanied.
My Project
My students have been away from my classroom for exactly one year as of today. We are a 100% distance learning school still. More than ever, these teens need to feel supported by their teachers and motivated to participate in Zoom class.
That is why I set up a three-week challenge for students to step up their participation in Zoom.
They earned credit each day towards prizes of their choice on Amazon. In an online shopping lesson, students chose everything from books and art supplies to fun cosmetology and friendship bracelet kits. They will use these items for a variety of things -- for self-care and self-expression (bracelet kits and art kits), expanding their knowledge and reading skills (books), accessing technology at home (online learning) and exploring careers (cosmetology items). In the process of choosing their prizes, they also learned about Amazon Prime, budgeting and sales tax.
