Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Let's be honest, reading straight from a textbook isn't the most effective way to learn! My students need lessons that are interactive & engaging, yet effective. It is difficult to demonstrate and use a manipulative as a whole group. A document camera makes this task much simpler so that all can see!
My students are a fabulous group of first graders that jump at the chance to be actively engaged in what is being taught.
They love to explore the world around them and learn new things. They face many challenges when it comes to education. They live in a predominantly Spanish speaking neighborhood. Many parents cannot help them with the necessary skills to be successful in their education outside of the classroom. Almost 97% of students are eligible for free or reduced meals. Most do not have access to technology that many other children often take for granted. With so many budget issues in the school system, there is no money left to buy technology related items that will facilitate better student learning. Yet, these challenges don't stop my students! They are eager, curious, and love to learn! This gift will help in my classroom for many years to come.
My Project
A document camera will allow for student engagement and participation in their learning. Rather than taking a lot of time away from instruction, by allowing almost 30 students to pass around one small item, a document camera allows the image to be broadcast for all to see at once. This is one piece of classroom technology that can be used to actively engage students in the learning process in many different ways and in many different subject areas. Document cameras allow students to see small items, text, and demonstrations in a much bigger way. I could list a hundred ways I would use it, but a few of the most beneficial ways include… read alouds with picture books, comprehension and vocabulary skill work, projecting of actual student work and actual objects, teacher modeled writing, shared student writing for group editing and revising, Math manipulatives, Step-by-step math problem solving, and Science Experiments.
Lessons from text books in our curriculum do not always meet the needs of all students.
Your gift can help put more technology into my classroom and will make a difference in my present, and future, students' lives. They say that picture is worth a thousand words. In my opinion, a document camera could be worth a thousand paragraphs!
