My students need more plants to attract bugs and butterflies to their urban garden and drones to study micro and macro aspects of their plants and the bugs!
Each day before school, students ask the science teacher if they can work in the school garden. Despite the drought, they have seen several insects and have come to the library to look them up. So we would like to have the students continue science learning about butterflies and bugs by using drones!
My students attend a continuation school for seventh through twelfth grades.
Students often come from juvenile hall and are on probation. Many are in group homes. Over the last year, the library has worked with the science teacher to expand and enrich the school garden. Students love working in their urban garden and have conducted several research projects about the drought, organic growing techniques and cultivating healthy food plants.
We would like the students to observe, study & collect data on plants & insects using drone technology.
My Project
Learning to use the drones and create videos will help our students pay closer attention to the the living creatures in the garden. After they compile data, they will share their findings with students video displays in the library. Our students will become much more engaged with hands-on learning with the drones as they make science videos.
Many have not had opportunities to work in a garden or visit community institutions like a science museum or zoo.
With this project, they will learn more about their urban garden, hands-on science and technology skills with drones. Study of live butterflies and bugs will "liven" up their science classes! None of our students have used drones and will enjoy science and video lessons in the garden!
