Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In a go-go-go world where students are wrapped up in technology, video games, and television, I'm happy to say nothing holds the attention of my students like a good non-fiction animal book.
I teach at a school where many of our families have limited income, English skills, or educational experiences.
Many of my students are at a literary disadvantage the day they walk in the door, either because of limited language acquisition, limited literacy in the home, or simply limited interest.
My Project
The one thing that my students universally enjoy during independent reading is non-fiction literature about animals. Those are always the first books to get snatched up, and they are always the ones my students request more of. I would love to provide my class with a quality set of ZooBooks for our class library. The ZooBooks set would expand the variety of animals they read about, and I find these kinds of books often lead to spontaneous research and writing.
By helping our class to purchase these books, you are investing in better literacy skills for students who are truly in need of all the support they can get.
Sometimes the biggest help of all is simply providing the desire to pick up a book and read.
