My Students

Our students work hard all year to prepare for their reading and math assessments in the spring. This trip is something they look forward to and it ties in nicely with our science program. These students need an exciting educational experience that will enrich their lives.

These students are curious 9 to 11 years old and love the wonder that science brings to their lives.

They are in regular education classrooms and live in a lower socioeconomic area compared to their surrounding suburbs in upstate New York. These 4th and 5th graders have a real yearning for investigating and learning about new things, but they are not always afforded the opportunities to do so. Our school is comprised of about 400 4th and 5th graders. Everyone works together to do what is best for our "family" at this school.

My Project

This trip to the Zoo will make learning about Genetics and Biomes more "real life" for the students. Rather than just reading about these topics they will be able to see and experience them in the everyday lives of specific animal groups.

Students will be able to use this trip to enhance their science unit through a thematic, hands-on, interactive tour experience.

They will be able to examine various animal families to look for inherited and acquired traits as well as their survival adaptations. Students will also investigate biodiversity and learn how animals help their environments thrive.

Donations to make this field trip possible will improve my students' ability to understand and apply scientific inquiry, concepts, and vocabulary. They will be able to apply the scientific method to enhance their future learning.
