This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm working with students to build a brand-new theatre program at our school. My students are primarily Hispanic and African-American and live in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago. These students are really dedicated and eager to learn new skills in theatre. Our class is designed to place emphasis on the many different career opportunities that can be found in the industry beyond those on the stage or in front of the camera. This project would give students the opportunity to work with professional-grade makeup and begin working on the skills needed for a career in special-effects makeup.

Getting hands-on experience is a fundamentally important method for learning, especially in the arts.

These amazing kids will get an opportunity to learn about basic techniques including blending, creating texture and how to care for their tools. Once they have learned the basics they will go on to learn how to create three-dimensional make-up including making their own prosthetics.

Theatre is more than acting, it takes many people with varied skills to create a production. We strive to teach our kids that the people who work behind the scenes are as important as those on the stage. We want our students to become well-rounded theatrical artists who know how to be a part of a collaborative ensemble.
