My Students

My 11th graders come from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Overall, my students are great - they are so smart and full of personality, passion, and belief in themselves and hope for our world. They are respectful and eager to learn, and I am grateful that I get to help them navigate their way through interesting texts.

As we have been studying through early American literature this year - and specifically Native American literature and explorers literature - I have noticed that the students are actually interested.

They are finding it relevant to their lives and to our time. They seem to be eager for more.

My Project

Quietly, with empty, tired eyes - some with mouths agape - the students roamed the halls toward their first-period class. It seemed as if at any moment, like zombies, they would turn and suck the life out of me. (This is what an early-morning school start-time can do to students.) As I looked around at the students, I laughed a bit, thinking about the zombie book I was reading and was going to introduce to my students that day. I also realized that if I didn't want my students to remain like zombies in class, then I would definitely need to just go ahead and really dive into this book with them and that a class set of Dread Nation books for my 11th Grade American Literature students would be necessary.

Students need to read, and generally speaking, they don't want to read things that are not interesting to them - they become zombies when it's not interesting.

At the same time, they need to read literature that has some substance, with historical and cultural value. A class set of the YA/Teen novel Dread Nation by Justina Ireland provides a balance between these two student needs. Furthermore, it serves as a tool to reach the interest of students of color, and also to bring racial issues to the forefront of students' minds in order to come to grips with the reality of America's past and present racial tensions. And lastly, a book like Dread Nation is useful to help develop the students' reading and analysis skills and has opportunities to be paired with informational and historical texts.
