Currently, I am teaching 11th and 12th grade English Language Arts. As of 2019, I am in my fourth year of teaching. In my first year, I discovered that many of my students were not reading on their own. This problem led me to find solutions in the theories and practices of Kelly Galagher and Penny Kittle. One key practice that I am following and implementing is independent, student choice reading. With book talks, time set aside for reading every day, and a growing number of high interest and relevant books on my shelves, it is my hope that students will enjoy reading. Consequently, as they enjoy reading, I will be pushing them toward reading more difficult texts, and also toward reading in order to improve their own writing.
